My name is Junaid, and I am a South African citizen and have lived in beautiful Cape Town for the entire 35 years of my life. I have a BSc Honours degree in Microbiology, a Masters in Biochemistry, and a PhD in Bioinformatics. While I have a talent for science, African Art is my passion.

I became interested in African Art about 5 years ago and initially collected contemporary carvings and sculptures. While doing research on the modern art forms from the various African countries, I stumbled across a website that showcased some antiques, and became obsessed with looking at pictures of African artifacts. I soon developed a need to look at as many old pieces as I could in person, and in no time bought my first piece, a (now) obvious fake. It wasn't even a copy of an authentic piece. Still, I was happy and soon became hooked on old African tribal art pieces, which is very rare here in South Africa as most locals do not appreciate art from the continent, even new forms.

A large number of refugees from other countries have flooded into South Africa over the years and many made Cape Town their home. Since jobs were very scarce, many started traveling to Central and West Africa to find relics, which were being snapped up by tourists. This has put me in the lucky position where I was able to forge relationships with more than thirty 'runners', who between themselves have more than 5000 pieces at any given time. Soon I started buying, and as I researched more, my 'eye' improved. The 'hunt', is to me more fun than the actual purchase. I love looking at, touching, and talking about pieces. The bargaining side of a traditional African market is also great fun once one gets used to the pressure! Eventually, as I started getting to know my fellow Africans better, I realised that even US$100 they send to their families can go a long way in their home countries. The problem is that when tourist season is over, things get a bit tough for these guys.

I ended up spending more and more cash on artifacts, and of course, I soon reached my budget's limits. I then used my IT skills to put together an African artifact osCommerce store, called AfricanRelics.com, to fund my hobby. As my customer base grew and I started getting frequent requests for contemporary, I decided to start an eBay store - assisted by my wife. African Relics is still operational, but deals only in older pieces and also provides a means for some of my suppliers to showcase some pieces that I am not personally interested in. AfricanRelics.com is a great way to help my suppliers make extra sales when tourist season is over. The store has recently had a makeover and is in the process of being restocked. Customers of that site that prefer to buy through eBay are directed to my eBay Store. Although our eBay store is still young, early eBayer interest has been encouraging and we would like to thank those who have supported us thusfar.

Remember, a dollar goes a LONG way in strife-torn Africa! Your purchases touch many lives.

Also, antiques or traditional pieces and contemporary art can complement each other very well - you don't have to choose.
