Alice's Animals
My latest hand embroidery project

Hello, and thanks for your interest in my little animals! I've been designing and sewing these miniature soft sculptures for over thirty years, and enjoy it more every day. I live and work in rural northern Minnesota, where wildlife abounds and inspiration is plentiful. I try to make my animals as realistic as possible, and do careful research before beginning a new design. Then I add a touch of whimsy, which gives these creatures a special charm. With every passing year they have become smaller, more delicate and more detailed-more of a challenge to make, but more fun too! 

Most of my animals are cut and sewn from synthetic fabric such as suedecloth, which doesn't fray or rip as easily as a natural fabric. I sew them inside out, and then turn them right side out-the most difficult step in the entire process! I stuff them very firmly with polyester fiberfill, using tiny pieces of stuffing to make the form even and smooth. After stuffing I sew on legs, tails, ears, etc., and then add the details. Features are all hand embroidered. I make fur from unravelled brushed yarn, and create wings by tucking small pieces of fabric to resemble feathers. I dress some of the animals in elaborate clothing, which I sew mostly by hand. I make all of the tiny accoutrements myself;nothing is found or purchased. And I don't believe in glue-all tiny pieces are stitched in place by hand. I love creating all the fine detail-endless possibilities! Thanks for visiting!
