Hi, there! Thanks for checking out AngelinaBeadalina! I'm Angela Greer Garren, but really I'm just plain old "Angie" or "Ang". I'm a stay at home mom with two wonderful munchkins who will soon be 5 and 6 years old. While they are still young enough to want to be seen with Mom and Dad, the glass takes a backseat to coloring Spiderman pictures and reading library books and exploring outdoors now that it's spring/almost summer. The glass is definitely a passion for me, though. I've been lampworking since February 2006, which just so happened to be the month I turned 40 years old. Let me tell you, I think this fourth decade is going to be the best yet, and melting glass is a part of that. After all those years of dabbling in this and that but not really feeling like I was making anything substantial, the feeling of melting glass and shaping it was like an art epiphany, a monumental "aha!" moment in my creative life.
Oh, I could ramble all day about art and creativity and expressing ideas in glass and-- whoops! Why don't I tell you a bit about my setup and what I make? I use mostly Moretti soft glass in my beads and sculptures, and that Moretti gets melted with the flame of my Nortel Minor Burner torch hooked up to proprane and a decrepit oxygen concentrator that struggles to keep up with what I want to do. I used to be able to simplify this description and say it takes about an hour to do a bead, but lately I've been making bigger pieces, too, so let's just say it's not a particularly fast process. Once a big glob of glass is melted and shaped and fussed over, it goes in my Aim kiln to anneal. Then, it gets either an "oooooh, aaaaaaaaah" from me and a cleaning or an "ewwwwwwwwww, arrrrrrrrgh" and a chuck into the yuck pile. I am a self-representing artist, which is just another way of telling you that I have all that equipment and use it all by myself to create my glass beads and sculptures (and that these aren't mass-produced goodies). I'm also a member of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers. Glass is one of the best things to ever happen to me! If you'd like to see how my beads have evolved since I started making these bigger focals, be sure to check out my archive of work in my pages of BeadArtists.org (the link is listed at the bottom of the page).
