Hi there! I'm Ashleigh. I'm currently on walkabout, driving my way around Australia with my twin sister Alyssa. And after that we're going to head off to new places, further afield.
I used to work in Canberra at the exclusive philatelic mail order firm, DIES&DAS Ltd. As one of the philatelic fraud staff, I got to do all kinds of spook things - what a blast!
I like modern dance, shooting the breeze with my mates on the internet, and I played a mean game of pool in my Uni days. I do like to do a bit of gambling, and my favourite game is rolling the bones - I'm a natural at it!
When it comes to stamps, I was collecting the "World I Like" for years, but I have since got into collecting the good ol' U.S. of A. And that is expensive, so my world collection took a back seat.
When I first came to eBay in August 2001, I took an optimistic approach. I thought that the odds of getting a genuine stamp were in my favour, just as I do with each roll of the dice. And there were heaps of bargains in the U.S. classics listings. Even picked up a couple of big ticket items for only about 15% of CV! Sadly, nearly all the stamps I bought appear to have been altered in some way, so I have been a bit more careful lately, and have been trying to buy from sellers with good records.
As part of my work for SCADS in the Philatelic Fraud department at DIES&DAS Ltd, I was asked to write an article on the problems of collecting U.S. classics on eBay. I got Schuylercrap and a few other good mates together to help me out, as my collecting U.S. by Scott prime number means I am completely ignorant of some of the trickier issues, like #10 and #315. You can see the good oil here - U.S. Classics on eBay - as is.
The Fraud on eBay - exposed! article shows some of the amazing things I learned whilst bargain hunting - there are some dodgy sellers out there who are not above altering stamps, and then listing them as though they possibly "might" be genuine. Geez! Try to get one of them certified, and I'll give you two chances that you will get a clean cert - Buckley's and none!
Better still, try some of the ideas in my list of buying tips, so that you don't get burned again.
