Boone's motto:"If the task is impossible, it may take a little longer!"
What do 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, etc. mean?
Standard thickness for ROUGH sawn lumber is expressed in quarters of an inch.
For example 1" = 4/4, 1.25” = 5/4, and so on.
The majority of our hardwood lumber is sawn between 1" and 2", although other thicknesses are available in more limited volumes. The standard thicknesses and their exact metric equivalent are shown below.
3/4 (3/4" = 19.0mm)
4/4 (1" = 25.4mm)
5/4 (11/4" = 31.8mm)
6/4 (11/2" = 38.1mm)
8/4 (2" = 50.8mm)
What do S2S, S3S, and S4S mean?
S2S means “surfaced on 2 sides.”
S2S lumber has been hit-and-miss planed from its rough-sawn thickness, but has not been finish planed or sanded.
S3S means “surfaced on 3 sides.”
S3S lumber has been surfaced on the two faces and has also been straight-lined on one edge.
