Hi: My name is Cynthia and I began hooking rugs about 15 years ago. My Great Grandmother also hooked rugs in the 1920s so I guess that the passion is inherited. I hook with wool strips of fabric as she did, and I use recycled and my own hand dyed wool. My rugs are finished with the traditional cotton rug tape that I hand sew to the back of the rug, or with wool yarn that I "whip" or crochet into the edge.
For those not familiar with Rug hooking, did you know that a hooked rug requires 4-5 times it's surface area in wool to complete! That's a lot of wool, and at $35 and up for one yard of hand dyed wool, it's not a cheap hobby! And it takes about 6-8 hours to hook one square foot. This does not include making the pattern (a purchased pattern for a medium/small rug is around $25 or the backing to draw your own pattern starts at $16 to $40 per yard), dyeing and cutting the wool. You can purchase a "kit" for a medium/small rug for around $150. This is the price for all the wool and printed pattern for you to complete the rug.
