Introduction:
  • "Basic" picture service allows for the placing of
two pictures in your ad (free)
  • You also have the option of adding 4 more images,
at a total cost of 50
  • 6-image "slide show" for $1.00
  • and larger "Super Size" pictures

  • "Enhanced" service offers:
  • Automatic picture formatting
  • Speedier uploading
  • "Preview" feature
  • "Drag & Drop", "Crop", "Rotate" and "Edit"
  • Adding 4 more images (50
  • 6-image "slide show"
  • "Super Size" pictures
  • (each feature at additional cost)

NOTE!
Click here for the browser requirements section
on this page, for important information
regarding using "Enhanced" Services

-Each image must be less than 300 kilobytes
in file size or it will be rejected
.....
-There is no need to pre-size your images
(unless you are using the basic preference,
with a file larger than 300 KB)

-With "Supersize" your file upload will be limited to 600K,
not 300K like under the standard size option

-ebaY does not expand images submitted.....
In other words, if a picture smaller than 400x300 pixels
is submitted, the picture will not be increased, or expanded

-Pictures that exceed 400W x 300H pixels are
automatically resized to fit the required dimensions

Caution!!
Currently, it is not possible to remove or edit a picture
once a listing is submitted.
Be sure you are sending the correct picture!

You may add or delete photos in the
Add Your Photos page before
the listing is submitted

You may add additional pictures, at a later time
via "Add to my item's description", (Site Map page),
using HTML to reference the picture.....
(it must be uploaded to web space, or an image host)
See my page for help...

If you submit an auction with an incorrect picture, you can
cancel the auction and re-list, and add the correct picture.....
You will have to follow the "Contact Support" procedure
to obtain refund of listing fee for the original auction.

Keep in mind that your browser may "time out" before the upload
is complete, if you have a slow dial-up connection to the Internet

If this is a frequent problem, try using the smallest filesize
(in KB) possible while still saving/creating
a large image(s) of your item
(i.e. 440w x 330h pixels)

If you do experience this time-out problem, the best way to save
your files (to keep them small in filesize yet large on screen)
is to use JPG as your format, and scan/save them
at 75 dpi....
Your scanner software or image editing software should have options
for picking the resolution, in dpi (or dots per inch)
For viewing images on screen (i.e. on the Web) higher resolution is unnecessary, and will bloat your file sizes without making
the images any better

Enhanced photo services browser requirements
"Enhanced" preference is available to
Windows users of:
  • Netscape 4.08+
  • InternetExplorer 4.01+
  • (see "chart" below)

On Netscape, the enchanced preference allows you to preview JPG's and GIF's and to crop and/or rotate them prior to submission
On IE, Enhanced allows you to use drag & drop to load images, to preview JPG, BMP and GIF's, and to crop and/or rotate them prior to submission

Notice!
With "Enhanced" Version, Microsoft Internet Explorer users must accept and download the Active X program
More about ActiveX

Netscape users need to click "Grant" when the Java Security screen shows up
Be sure to answer "Grant" to both dialogs
Then select "Remember this decision"

Also, make sure that your computer is set to accept "cookies"

Many errors in attempting to submit pictures are the cause of using the "Enhanced" version with an older browser which will not support ebaY "Enhanced" picture upload! (see "chart" below)

If you are experiencing difficulties, go back and try "Basic" Service, to see if that works correctly...

Other difficulties may be from attempting to use Picture Services with a browser that has ActiveX/JavaScript disabled!

If your Internet browser is not configured to accept
ActiveX Controls or JavaScript,
you will need to make the following changes:

INTERNET EXPLORER:

1) Click on the Tools pull-down menu, and select Internet Options
2) Select the Security tab, and click the Custom Level button
3) Check the Enable box under the "Run ActiveX Controls and plug-ins" header

NETSCAPE:

1) Click on the Edit pull-down menu, and select Preferences
2) Click on the Advanced box
3) Check the "Enable Java" and "Enable JavaScript" boxes

Before trying to use IPIX's "Enhanced" Version, look at this chart
to see if you can use it with your browser......
To see what version browser that you have, go up to Help, and look at the bottom of the list.
It will say "about" whatever version that you are using. Click on it and get the number.

AOL and Ipix services..
If you are an AOL user,
and your pictures appear "fuzzy"
on the ebaY auction page,
or are not viewable,
you should disable "image compression"

for instructions on disabling
Image Compression

AOL members can experience problems
stemming from the renaming of a file,
instead of reformatting that file,
such as naming an .art file to .jpg.,
or having files with no extensions at all.

Because AOL's FTP space allows this,
some members are not aware that
formatting and naming are not the same thing.
The picture file must actually
be "saved" as a .jpg, (not just renamed).
Just typing .jpg on the end of a file name
does not make it a .jpg file

Many of the problems members have with AOL
are caused by data submission - and heavy traffic,
at the time of submission.

This is a common issue that occurs in different forms, particularly if the data
being submitted is large.

Most AOL versions are capable of
Enhanced Picture Services use.
Use of Enhanced version seems to be
more successful, as Enhanced version
actually sends less data then Basic does.

Even with Enhanced, it is sometimes necessary
to try again when errors occur.

Relisting:
If you are using Enhanced Services and your AOL browser, you will see an "edit pictures" button on your Relist Item form in the Image box. You can click that button to add, edit, or delete any images

General Fixes
Slow uploads
If this is a frequent problem, try using the smallest filesize
(in KB) possible while still saving/creating a large
image(s) of your item - (i.e. 440w x 330h pixels)

If you do experience this time-out problem, the best way to
save your files is to use JPG as your format,
and scan/save them at 75 dpi....
(this will keep them small in filesize yet large on screen)
-Your scanner software or image editing software should
have options for picking the resolution,
in dpi (or dots per inch)
-For viewing images on screen (i.e. on the Web)
higher resolution is unnecessary, and will bloat
your file sizes without making the images any better

Picture load fails to complete:
"Invalid size or file type" message
If you are experiencing this problem using the basic preference
it may be an indication that your system is unable to reliably
communicate with the Picture Services server
(the invalid size or type error page is generic and can be received
after such communication problems).

Disconnect & reconnect your Internet service
(a reboot may also be appropriate)

Or - it may be that you have not "saved" your picture file
appropriately (size, and/or filename)
Click here for correct image "file-saving" info

If using AOL, make sure the Compress Graphics setting is
off in your AOL browser
Click here for Image Compression settings info...
If possible, connect to AOL and minimize the AOL browser.
Then start a new session of Internet Explorer by itself.
In this new browser window, try your upload

Download Irfanview for easy picture file formatting:

WebTV
Ipix is not currently programmed to support WebTV users
You can, however, use:
Honesty ("plus" only)
for photo-hosting
or:
AuctionWatch ("plus" only)
or:
Photopoint ("plus" or "classic")

General fixes:
Delete cookies
("Start" - "Explorer" - "Windows" - "Cookies")
See
Bob's "cookies" fact page
Delete temporary internet files
("Start - "Explorer" - "Windows" - "Temp")
Then re-set your photo preference here:
Reset photo preferences

Or, bypass photo service all together, here:
Original "Sell your item" page
(The "old" Sell page)

Lost pictures on auctions
Frequently they are really there - try a reload to make sure.
Then log off, and back on again and look.
(This seems to be especially prevalent with AOL)

Error 100002 (and variations)
Usually indicates a browser incompatibity
If you are operating an older version of Internet Expolorer, use "Basic" Service
Also, Netscape 6.0 has been reported to have problems with "Enhanced" - try "Basic" Service
See
Browser compatibility chart

Error 100005 (and variations)
Indicates that your computer is unable to reliably communicate with the Picture Services server
-It often is an indicator that there is a bad "path" between your server and Ipix
-Try disconnecting from your Internet service, and re-connecting.
-(Sometimes it also helps to re-boot your computer)
-(And don't forget to empty your "cache" files regularly)

Error 500001 (and variations)
"Browser priveleges test failed"
Your settings (Netscape) are incompatible:
First, clear browser cache
In your Netscape browser window, click on the "Security" button on the toolbar
(the open lock icon).
This will bring up the Security Info dialog box..

Next, click on the "Java/Javascript" choice on the left of this dialog.
That will change the right hand pane of the dialog window.
The title of the Window will change to "Java/Javascript".

Look on the right hand side of the dialog box.
One (or seveal) companies will be listed, along with three buttons:
View Certificate
Remove
Edit Privileges

Find one that says "Internet Pictures Corporation" and click on it once.
With "Internet Pictures Corporation" now selected
(shown by a colored highlight)
click the "Remove" button to the right.

Netscape will ask you to confirm the removal
Click the "OK" button.

Click OK in theJava/Javascript" dialog to close it.
Go back to eBay, reset your Picture Services preference to "Enhanced"
Go to the Add Photo page (by selecting a category).
You will be asked to "Grant" privileges for both of the Picture Services applets.
Select "Grant" to both
Check the "Remember this decision" checkbox in both dialogs.

Adding photos
Once an auction has started you cannot change the photo (using Ipix)
However, you may "add" photos by uploading them to web space, or Image host - and use "revise" (if there are no bids) or "add to my item's description" (if there are bids)
HTML code must be used
(see
Picture uploading basics)

Relisting
Changing photos when re-listing is only available with "Enhanced" Service, and when using Internet Explorer browser version 5.0 or above

Basic picture info for beginners
You will need:

{A} Your picture (from a camera or scanner)

{B} Save it, as a .jpg or .gif (jpeg is better) to a disc, or to your hard drive ("C")
(Remember which folder you saved it to)

{C} Upload it to a server or image host
       (1)ebaY has an in-house pic-upload program
(Although it is new, and they have not worked out all the "glitches yet)
Click Here for ebaY Photo Service information
(2)Your ISP may offer web space for uploading
         (Check with them for info)
If you use your ISP, you will need to download an FTP program, which is easy and
speedy once you learn it - for FTP tutorial CLICK HERE

       (3) Use one of the Auction Image Hosts available
Click on for a list of ones to choose from

{D} Your picture, once uploaded, will have a unique "address" (URL)
(Right click on the picture, choose "properties", to see the URL)
Place that URL in the pic box provided on the listing page

{E} If you want to place the pic within the description use HTML, as follows:
       <img src=URL-of-picture>
Use <center> in front, and </center> after to center the pic on the page

{F} You can place one pic in the image box, and additional pics in the description, using the
       <img src=> code

{G} If you don't use the pic box provided by ebaY, you will have to place some small
image (gif) there, in order to generate the "pic" icon on the category pages

(You can use http://pics.ebay.com/aw/pics/dot_clear.gif, as an example)
