Hi, I'm Patti, the Assistant to the Director, and here is my husband, Gaylen.
I have been volunteering at the Gibbon Conservation Center, GCC, (formerly International Center for Gibbon Studies) since March 1993. GCC, founded in 1976 by Director Alan Mootnick, is a nonprofit organization in southern California. Gibbons are tree-dwelling small apes that are considered the world's greatest acrobats. They can leap 50 feet at 35 mph while in the forest canopy 200 feet up. Gibbons are monogamous (rare in primates) and walk upright in trees and when on the ground. In the trees, they move around by brachiating--hanging under branches and swinging to another branch with their long arms. Gibbons have a wonderfully musical call that can project 2 miles through the forest.
