Well there's a dark and a troubled side of life.
There's a bright and a sunny side too.
But if you meet with the darkness and strife,
The sunny side we also may view.
A few years later I started school in the usual way, by hiding under my desk while an earthquake shook, rattled and rolled thru Main Street Elementary. Seems they'd stopped giving earthquake safety drills there a few years before. Budget cuts, don't you know. Being it was our first day of kindergarten, I doubt they'd have done us much good anyway. Luckily I had some experience with roofs caving in, so I hightailed it out of there fast as my tiny feet would carry me, baseball cards tucked safely in my Scooby-Doo lunchbox.
Since then life's been pretty uneventful. If you don't mention the tidal wave that crashed through my high school graduation. And mostly we don't. So the remaining members of our class have a bit of the water phobia. So be it. The next year's graduating class brought surfboards to their commencement. Resourceful lot, they were. Would that we were half as prepared. Lucky for me I opened my graduation gifts before the ceremony. That waterproof carrying case I got for my baseball cards sure came in handy.
The giant manatee that ate my college roommate? To tell you the truth, by then the whole thing seemed pretty ho-hum. Good thing that monster upchucked the filing cabinet where I'd started keeping the cards before it waddled off. Stella was one thing, but that cabinet cost me a mint. I had to sell my textbooks to buy that thing. Roomies are a dime a dozen -- at least that's the going price on eBay.
Did I tell you about the day I got my driver's license? Tornado picked up the car, instructor and all, and spun it all the way to Oklahoma City. I heard that guy became a lion tamer. Less stress, you know. Good thing for him that car flipped over and dumped that filing cabinet right out. Otherwise I'd have had to track him down. Oh, and never buy an Oldsmobile. Trunk latches pop at the drop of a hat -- or a steel lined fireproof four drawer kenslo special.
Day I bought my first house..... termites bit just the right spot on just the right joist. Big old pile of sawdust. But guess what was standing in the middle? The toilet, sure. But near that? Cabinet full of cards, all right. Lucky, lucky me.
See, now we've had earthquakes, storms, tornados, pestilence, famine.... oh yes, famine, cause you'd better believe it's hard to find a restaurant that'll let me in after that salmonella poisoning thing a few years back.
I guess we shoulda seen that fire coming. The guys down at the corner store sure did. They flat out told me to get more insurance, but Mr. Smiley down at the agency always locks his door and closes his shutters when he sees me coming. I think he's still mad at me because of that time I accidentally nudged his Buick off a cliff. Don't ask. Long story.
Let me tell you, sitting here wiping the soot off this here filing cabinet, I got to thinking that these cards might be a bit unlucky. But only for a second. See, I figure it's more likely that they're the luckiest darn things in the world. But I ain't nothing if not willing to take a risk, so here I am selling off my cards on eBay, spreading the good luck around. Hey, what's the worst that could happen?
Oh, the storm and its fury broke today,
Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear.
Clouds and storms will in time pass away.
The sun again will shine bright and clear.
Here's our beagle, Pucker:
His favorite activities include chasing bees, playing football, 'kissing' everything in sight, dragging his Linus blanket around while he waits for the Great Pumpkin to arrive in the pumpkin patch he planted
