Painting in my studio

Welcome. In case you don't know how to pronounce the name Zeh, it rhymes with day. I have been painting professionally with watercolors and acrylics since 1996. Before that, I did free-lance illustration in pen and ink for 17 years while my three boys were growing up. You probably know that drawing well is a prerequisite for painting in a realistic style. So all those years of pen and ink became a great building block for my current work in painting. Actually, as soon as I could hold a crayon in my chubby little fist as a young child, I was drawing, and I have continued with art in one form or another to this day.
Besides watercolor and acrylic paintings, I paint murals for commission either on canvas or directly on the mural surface and have painted murals for both the private and public sector. The largest painting that I have done was a backdrop for the Nutcracker Ballet. That painting was 22 ft. high by 45 ft. long. So it was quite a change to start painting miniatures for eBay, but I love it!

The ideas for my paintings start with a photo I have taken or sketch I have made of a scene or a grouping of flowers that strike me as beautiful. Sometimes, I sit out in my garden and paint or bring the flowers in to see them up close. I am a real lover of the outdoors - especially coastlines and mountains. At least once a year, I take a trip to climb in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The photos and sketches I have from those trips provide the mountain scenes that I am so fond of painting. Excursions to the shore give me material for seascapes. Also, I enjoy gardening. Many of my paintings are of flowers from my own gardens, but sometimes those of others inspire me as well. While outdoors, I enjoy listening to and watching the birds. I have a couple of friends who are wonderful photographers. Along with my own photos of birds in my garden, my friends provide me with great pictures of birds for my paintings.
