I worked in the newspaper industry for nine years. The papers I worked for were all small businesses where all of the employees wore a number of different hats. I did some writing, some accounting, some marketing, some toilet cleaning and a lot of page layout.

I really enjoyed laying out the newspaper pages—deciding what looked best where, what fonts to use and how best to showcase the pictures. I first started using PhotoShop in my capacity as "Head Layout Goddess". (Remember it was a small company. We made up our own job titles.)

I fell in love with all of the cool things that PhotoShop could do and starting using it to make templates. The rest, as they say, is history.

You can also get a free program called G.I.M.P. that will open .psd files. It doesn't do everything that PhotoShop does, but it's still a very good program. You can get it at gimp.org.
