Hi! My Name is Linay Atoya Franklin-Foreman and I am a 31 year old mother of 2 girls, devoted wife, full-time worker, and part-time business owner. (Try saying that all in one breath...better yet doing it!) I have a 10 year old daughter, Tajah A'lizabeth, and a 5 year old daughter, Lacey Alexandra . I figured since my husband and I aren't having anymore children and together we have 2 girls I combined my name, Linay with his name, Stacy and came up with Lacey. We all reside in the house that I grew up in (Thanks Grandma and Grandpa! *they bequeathed it to me*), which is a 1930's "rowhouse" (townhouse) located in Washington, D.C. My husband and I spend our weekends renovating the house ourselves (with the help of some "Handy Man" friends). Our goal is to preserve the old beauty of the house and incorporate a few modern twists. So far it's looking Great! (If I must say so myself!) I work full time at American University. It is here that I plan to continue to pursuit of my degree this fall where my major will be Art Education. There is never a dull moment in my life because I'm always doing something (as you have read)! I enjoy writing poetry, coloring with my daughters, watching old movies, and going for long, relaxing drives through the countryside with my family. Always Unique Art has always be my first love, it was something I did when I wanted to journey into another world, something I did when I wanted to have fun or unleash some creativity. That was until my friends started paying me to make things for them and then art also became profitable. I found myself making cards, gift baskets, or painting on jeans, notebooks, jackets, and T-shirts for my friends every free moment I had. Well as a result, my friends told their friends and their friends told their friends and so on and so on. While in high school, word spread about my artistic talent and I was urged by some of the teachers to take a business development class. And it was there that it all began! One day the teacher of the course announced a City-wide business plan contest. She asked me to participate and develop a business plan for a company that I thought would thrive in the inner city. So, the artist in me came up with the idea to set up a hand-painted clothing store (at that time custom painted clothing was very popular in DC *matter of fact it still is*). Well, I won 2nd place in the contest and the teacher loved my plan so much that she recommended that I enroll in Business Entrepreneurship courses at Howard University to gain the education needed to support my idea. I heeded her advice and enrolled. So impressed with my Business Plan and enthusiasm the Washington DC Public School/Private Partnership Alliance paid for me to take the courses. I graduated from the course and received my Business Entrepreneurship Certification. The product of my love for art and my newly received business entrepreneurial education produced Always Unique. Always Unique is my company that I run on a part-time basis. The company isn't the namesake of my step-daughter - - for the idea and the name of the company were thought of years before my husband and I met. In actuality, the company was named Always Unique because all of my items are exactly that...always unique. I specialize in hand-painted and hand-crafted one of a kind items. Piggy Banks, T-shirts, Sweatshirts, Canvas Shoes, jeans, jean jackets, personalized baby items, cards, picture frames, floral arrangements, event favors, etc. I also make specialty, customized gift baskets and around the holidays I make personalized hand-painted glass Christmas ornaments.
