Magicalrealist Gallery
About Me
Magicalrealist Gallery has four major types of merchandise: hand dyed fabric (specializing in silk) & embellishments, art sunprints, writing, and the heathen shop. In addition to custom fabric dyeing, I also create unique fabrics and fabric collections. When I create a new fabric collection, I announce it via my store newsletter, where I also announce sales, new products, gallery shows, etc.
I started the gallery in 2003 to sell my art, then expanded into pagan and heathen related items with the slogan Your Pagan and Heathen Store, and am now concentrating on my art, writing, and crafts such as my hand dyed fabrics. Magicalrealist Gallery sells things I've made (art, writing, fabric, etc.) and heathen related items.
I live in Green Valley, Nevada, with my mom, my cat Shadow, a garden of woefully inadequate size, and altogether too many kitchen gadgets. Two pivotal events in my life revolved around gifts. Heathenry came to me in the form of a book about the runes, a gift from my brother's girlfriend for my 17th birthday. And I became an artist the day I gave away a sunprint at my Yule party in 2002. My best friend Ingrid and I are quilters. I had started making hand dyed fabrics and sunprints to use in quilts, and I had wrapped up a sunprint for "the present game" where everyone brings one gift and they are traded around until everyone has exactly what they want. I thought Ingrid would end up with the sunprint, but I was surprised when her teenage foster son, who wanted to grow up to be a Navy diver, nabbed it instead. He said he thought it looked like an underwater scene and he was going to bring it with him when he joined the Navy. That was the moment I realized my sunprints are art.
About My Art
So what's a sunprint?
A sunprint is an original, one of a kind contact photograph, made by capturing a photonegative image on fabric with
one or more washes of light-sensitive water-based paint. Sunprinting, also called heliography,
is a contact photography process which originated in the 1800s. Just like a regular photo, once developed a
sunprint is no longer light sensitive and can be displayed under full lighting. A sunprint on
fabric can even be ironed. And what's magical
realism?
Magical realism is a
subcategory of surrealism.
I have always had an awareness of the magical real, as my Native American father taught me. "The magical real" is a translation of the art and literary term "lo real maravelloso". To
me, creating beauty is
spiritual. Art is meditation.
The world I depict in my art is a world where nature
and supernature are one. The medium of
sunprinting is ideal for magical
realism, since a sunprint is a
direct manifestation of the
convergence of the ethereal
force of natural sunlight and
the physical form of the
printed objects, and thus, a
union of the divine and earthly
realities.
