Hello! My Name is Cheryl. I live in Maryland and am a collector of many things, especially anything Vintage. I love red transferware, old handbags, lace, buttons ~ you name it ~ if its old, I LOVE it!
I first learned to sew at age 5. I will never forget Ms. Brown, a neighbor who lived downstairs in our apartment building way back then. She was a seamstress. I would go visit and spend hours with her, watching her sew and create gorgeous dresses and suits. She gave me my first 'lil sewing basket ~ a tin container shaped like a picnic basket. I thought it was the most gorgeous thing ever! By age 12 I was making my own clothes. I would make any and everything possible. Later on in years my ceramic teacher started teaching doll classes. I was so excited, and it was the beginning of what I love so much to do today.
I enjoy creating things and have a passion for all things "Mammy". It all started many years ago taking doll classes. Everyone seems to like making pretty dolls. I, on the other hand, just kept drifting back in time. Not even my teacher at the time could relate or even liked any of my dolls. Most would tell me they were much too dark, but I love them that way. Later on I sat back and thought of how people were during the period of "Mammy", and all the photos or anything related to "Mammy" was so so the same. I decided it was time for "Mammy" to step out and be a 'lil glam for her time, and with that came "Mammy Stitches." I began making Mammy Dolls with lots and lots of fabric, old buttons, and vintage lace. Sometimes I would even add a piece of vintage jewelry. Folks would always tell me that my doll dresses are much too nice for a doll. They are made as though you could put them on a child. I am very particular about my dolls. Sometimes it is hard for me to stop and say "OK, that's enough, she needs nothing else!" LOL! I am a doll lover with a passion. I love creating new dolls from cloth. In the past I have made numerous reproduction dolls from porcelain. But cloth is my passion and my freedom of expression. I hope you enjoy my dolls as much as I do.
