Greetings! I am a practicing machinist and toolmaker living in York, PA, the land of Harley-Davidson. My interests include the tools of my trade (both for use at work and home as well as collecting), books, fishing, hunting, geology & natural history, woodworking, aviation, automobiles, engineering and most things mechanical, and of course Harleys. Since I collect all sorts of things related to my interests (and some that I just think are interesting at the time I get them - like the 120mm shell casing and other artillery rounds in the living room), the house is a true pack rat's nest. The garage is packed, my shop is packed to the point where I need to move stuff just to try and work - well, you get the picture (people drive by & think I'm having a yard sale - Fred Sanford would be proud).
More On The Pack Rat:
I love eBay since it allows me to find a wide range of things that I could not otherwise find at local auctions and shops. It also allows me to do this regardless of my work schedule - did you ever try to go to an auction when you work 3rd shift?
About my auctions: I try to describe the items I sell to the best of my ability. I try to be as harsh and as critical as possible so that my customers are not disapponted with their purchase. With some items, particularly test and dial indicators, I check them to make sure they work and describe what is wrong with them if they don't. If they don't work or stick slightly I sell them as FOR PARTS OR REPAIR. I don't repair them myself (I have enough to do keeping my own working properly) and I don't send them to the local instrument shop for work - that costs me $20.00 just to look at it & tell me what is wrong (not to mention the actual repair costs). I want my customers to be satisfied and be able to come back and buy from me without worrying about the quality of the items they buy.
The 'old' New House
I moved into my new place and started redoing it in November of '04 (a little over a year since my ex and I parted ways). The neighbors are happy, as it was the neighborhood "shack". 1800 square feet of unmaintained house, with garage, on an overgrown 1/4 acre lot. After a year plus it is starting to look like a home now. I just have a kitchen and a bathroom to redo, plus the all time great spring project of re-landscaping the yard. It is slowly getting to the point where you can live in it, although it is still packed with all of the treasures that I have stored away over the last 20+ years since I finished school and started working. I am trying to clean out everything as I go. Just too much to put away and keep. I have also found that I have duplicated alot of things having kept so much in storage lockers (too $*%@&$%!! lazy to take a day to dig something out in the middle of winter, so I would buy another one to keep myself from freezing). It finally hit me as to how I got three 8 drawer roller cabinets, two 3 drawer risers, and a bunch of 8, 11, and 12 drawer mechanics and machinists chests filled to capacity - I didn't feel like getting frostbite. Couple that with my love for books and other neat things and it becomes readily apparent that my house kind of looks like a storage locker in the garage, my shop (still can't get to the workbench or machines), the boiler room, and any other place where there is room (excluding living space). The stuff has GOT TO GO!.
