My name is Mary. Because of a spinal cord injury 14 years ago, I retired to the least expensive property I could find; a 6 acre ridge in the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. I walk very slowly and often with my head down to avoid tripping over bushes, branches, stones, pets, etc.. Which is how, one day 12 years ago, I found Agrimonia (which is often called Agrimony in the U.S.). I recognized it from a book on herbs I had just started reading.
I wasn't "into" herbs but after having lived an active life for 50 years my sudden disability was boring beyond words. The book I was reading told about Agrimonia being used by the ancient Greeks for eye infections and battle wounds and by the early Romans for "naughty," livers. My liver is well behaved but a few weeks after I spotted the Agrimonia plant growing by my driveway a stray cat delivered 6 kittens under my house. My son crawled under to have a look at them and reported that we would have to put them down immediately because their eyes were locked shut with a hard crust from which a gooey white substance was oozing. It sounded like conjunctivitis to me. My little Agrimonia plant came to mind so, why not? I tried it. I simmered the leaves in water to make a very strong tea. I washed their eyes four times a day for 5 days by which time they were already bright eyed and playing like kittens should. I decided I wanted to find out more about this Herb. As soon as I started researching, I realized I wasn't alone.
The title above is a quote from one of the many research articles on Agrimonia published on the National Institute Of Health's web site, www.pubmed.gov. Scientists came to this conclusion when study after study demonstrated that:
. Agrimonia (has)"...anticoagulant and antiplatelet action..." American Journal of Chinese Medicine.
. "..showed Hepatoprotective effects on tracrine induced cytotoxicity in human liver-derived Hep G2 cells.." College of Pharmacy and Phytofermentation Research Center
. "These results suggest that some plants of the genus Agrimonia contain potential antiviral activity against HBV (Hepatitis B virus)." Cell Biology Laboratory, Korea Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology
. "These results demonstrate the antihyperglycaemic, insulin-releasing and insulin-like activity in agrimony eupatoria." School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Ulster, Coleraine, U.K.
. "These results indicate that Agrimoniin (a compound of Agrimony) is a potent antitumor tannin and suggest that the antitumor effect may be due to this tannin enhancing the immune response..." Miyamoto K., Kishi N., Koshiura R.

"...compounds (in Agrimonia) with recognized anti-inflammatory properties such a procyanidins, kaempferol 3-O-(6-O-p-coumaroyl)-glucoside and quercetin glycosides were identified for the first time. These results are predictive of the beneficial effects of this fraction, or some of its compounds, in human health, as possible anti-inflammatory drug." Biomedical Chromatography Journal (BMC)
The only way one Herb could be effective against all of these disorders is by repairing and replacing the cells in the immune system which would normally prevent these disorders but, because they are environmentally or genetically compromised, are either not able to recognize and or attack certain pathogens. Hence, Agrimonia must be an immunomodulatory. By using the term "immunomodulatory" as apposed to "immune stimulator" scientists are indicating that Agrimony does not just stimulate the immune system to strengthen its response, but that it also repairs the genetic programing of immune cells that are over reactive as in the case of allergic reactions that are out of proportion to the presenting allergens or in the case of autoimmune system disorders where pro-inflammatory cytokine producing immune cells are attacking healthy cells.
I decided to sell this wonderful Herb because I believe, as I say on my web site, "everybody deserves affordable health care." And because I know that modern science is trying to synthesize the compounds in Agrimonia so that they can be patented. One compound has already been incorporated into a very successful patented drug that is sold in tropical regions of the world to repair damage to the liver caused by Schystosomiasis and kill the tiny worms that cause this fatal disease.
