Hi! New River Gourmet was started in February 2008 after about two years of research and business planning. We sell lots of gourmet food items including dried fruits, snacks, nuts, dried mushrooms, dried chiles, oils, loose leaf teas, and more! My name is Melissa Pilkington and this is now my full time job and I love it! I handle the day-to-day sales, the advertising, ordering, packaging, accounting, and everything else (But there is no complaining here!) This is a great improvement in my work life as it is very enjoyable.
You may ask what qualifies me to do all of this? Well, I have a BS from Virginia Tech in Food Science and Technology. Before deciding to take this wonderful adventure, I worked for almost 9 years for Tyson Foods in Richmond, VA as the Food Safety Manager, the Quality Assurance Manager and the Production Manager (though not all at the same time). So, as you can see I have worked with food for quite some time now, and it was just a natural progression for me to start my own business.
I am happily married to Robert Pilkington. He is an architect and a very nice and gracious man. We love to travel. We jump at any chance to go somewhere new and exotic. We have no children yet -- maybe someday. We live in the beautiful mountains of southwestern Virginia in the small town of Shawsville. It is only about 15 minutes from the VA Tech campus.
