In 1987 I started working for Double D Promotions. They were one of the largest autograph and memorabilia show promoters in the country. They existed before Tristar and Steiner.We seemed to have a major show every month. I had the best job; I had the privilege to sit next to the players and assist them during the show. Many of you in NY may have already seen me then. We had super shows with Hall of Famers, Brooklyn Dodgers, NY Yankees, and NY Mets. We were probably the first outfit to begin naming our shows. "500 HR Show", "300 wins show" etc. We also had many private signings with players unable to participate in our shows. I was lucky enough to sit with DiMaggio, Duke Snider, Mike Schmidt, Gary Carter, Gale Sayers, Paul Hornung etc etc etc. Being in my early 20s I was in heaven. I made alot of contacts as you can imagine.
In 1988 my wife and I were fortunate enough to open our first store: Baseball's Sweet Spot. The store was alot of fun. It also allowed me to continue dealing with athletes and to begin promoting my own shows. And I was only 21, married and with a beautiful baby girl.
Our shows featured a number of firsts such as the "Pray for Rain" show with Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain. It was their first appearance in the NY area together at a show. Then our "Perfect Game" show included both Yogi Berra and Don Larsen Commemorating the only perfect game ever thrown in a world series. Surprisingly, Yogi and Don told me it was their first time appearing at a show together in NY as well. And last but not least I was the first promoter in the United States to have the newly elected Hall of Fame NL Umpire Al Barlick at an autograph show. This show was dedicated to Al and it was his first advertised show after being elected to the Hall of Fame. He even came back over the house for dinner and talked for hours about his 32 years in baseball.
