About the Artist

About the Artist "Oldmansilver" Rom Brusius, Southern Oregon senior artist, silversmith, has been creating one of a kind silver angels and other designs for the past twenty years. His original designs have sold at galleries, art shows and fairs from Sacramento to Seattle. Many of the designs were first made as loving personal gifts for family and friends. In order to make some of his beautiful original designs available to more people at an affordable price they are reproduced in his own molds through the fine detail lost wax casting process. These exact duplicates of his original work are each personaly signed and hand finished by Rom. While trained in several art mediums, Rom is self-taught as a silversmith and currently works in a modest but comfortable studio attached to the home he shares with many cats in the mountains of southern Oregon.

The Little Boy who saw the Angels

I have been asked many questions about my designs and my personal connection to the angels so here are two short stories that will answer those questions in a general manner which is comfortable for me. They were written in the past few years from childhood memories and I have taken the creative liberty of making them interesting to read, I hope, but they are the truth ..Ron

"The First Time I Died"

by Ron Brusius

Horses, wagons and cars were special things when I was four. During world war two the little street we lived on only had three families who owned cars. Ours was a narrow street with two story houses close together on both sides, giving it the sound effect of a small canyon. There were still a number of horse drawn wagons serving our neighborhood and when they came down the street the clop clop clop of horse's steel shoes echoed their arrival. Some, like the milkman, came as regular as clock work and others, especially the waffle wagon were always a delightful surprise. A nickel would buy a large freshly cooked waffle served on folded newspaper. You could cover it with melted butter and cinnamon sugar or even pure honey, what a treat on a cool autumn day. It was fun to watch the horse's nose blow long streams of steam into the cold air as you waited for your waffle to cook. During the summer there were more horse drawn wagons. They brought a variety of goods and services from eggs, fresh produce and clothes poles, to the tinker who sharpened tools and fixed things. The milkwagon was my favorite. The empty glass bottles rattled and tinkled like little bells, and water from melting ice always dripped out somewhere. This wagon was pulled by a special horse who would wink at you and roll back his lips if you made funny faces at him. When the milkman had delivered to several houses, the horse would move the wagon up the block to meet him.

That October day Sammy and I were looking under the wagon to see where the water was coming out. Suddenly Sammy pushed me into the dripping water. I fell down under the wagon just as the horse moved up the block to meet the milkman. I saw the big wheel roll over my chest. I never felt anything except cold. When the cold went away I felt nothing and knew only that I was alone in a dark place. I was unaware of the panic felt by my Grandmother who was watching me at the time, or the guilt experienced by the milkman for not setting the wagon brake. For just a flash of time I was able to see, as if from above, the neighbor's car with white towels hanging out the windows and horn blowing as they rushed my crushed body to the hospital. The darkness returned and for a long time I knew only that I was alone and waiting for something. When I first saw the light it was a small dot far away. Then the light got larger and closer as it formed a tunnel of light from the dot to where I was. I wanted to go through the tunnel out of the darkness, but there was a soft voice all around me and it said "not yet, you must go back". Then I saw the beautiful people come out of the tunnel. They wore glowing soft white robes and lines of shinning light swirled around them. As they led me through the darkness they told me that Sammy had disturbed the order of things. He was supposed to have been under the wagon. I had to go back to live my life because there was much I must learn and teach before I could go through the tunnel to the other side. They told me they would always be there and would come again when I was ready for them.

We stopped moving and the angel in front touched the dark in a special way with her finger. An opening appeared which I could see through into the hospital room where I was already laying in bed... When I looked up from the bed with my real eyes, I could only see a white glow covering their faces but I knew they were smiling as they closed the hole to the other side. I had a birthday while in the hospital. The candles on the cake reminded me of the beautiful people so I told my Mother about them. She said I was very sick and had most likely seen the nurse in her white dress come into the darkened room from the lighted hallway and then had a dream about it. I was in the hospital a long time before they let me go home in a full upper body cast. The hospital had listed my injuries as a broken arm, broken collar bone, thirteen broken ribs and a collapsed lung. At first one of the Doctors told my Father he didn't think I was going to live. I did but Sammy didn't. He died of pneumonia before my cast came off. He was laid out in the living room of their home a few doors away. I told my Mom I really wanted to say goodbye to Him so She took me there. He was in an open casket, it was the first time I ever saw a dead person. He was very white and they had dressed him up like he was going to Sunday school. Seeing him like that didn't bother me because I knew it was supposed to be that way but I did wonder if he was just out there waiting or if he was already with the beautiful people.

Clover Dairy paid all the hospital bills and gave me a new fancy electric train set for Christmas. The milkman and his funny horse still came to our street but now he always set the brake and walked back to his horse and wagon. The horses and wagons are all gone from our modern cities, however they live on in my memory as bright and clear as the beautiful people.

STORY TWO

Angels without Faces

by Ron Brusius

As a young child I saw Angels for the first time during a near death experience after being run over by a milk wagon. The angels came often when I was very young and returned once more to save me from drowning when I was a foolish young man. With what I thought was the wisdom of maturity, I took control of my life, and the angels seemed a distant fantasy. In nineteen eighty four, two work related back injuries had resulted in two years of over medicated unsuccessful treatment, I was still in constant pain. My life seemed void of color as the darkness crept in. I was divorced, disabled, disillusioned and depressed. At my darkest moment the angels came as in childhood and once again they led me out of the darkness and back into God's pure light. They taught me how to see more than what my eyes behold and to know that which I have not been taught. They told me to create beauty that would inspire love and faith. They made a promise, so did I and the angels have guided every day of my life since then. I still see the beautiful people, as I called them in childhood, and they still radiate intense beauty but I have never seen their faces. Perhaps when my mission here is done and I go through the tunnel to the other side, I will clearly see their faces with spiritual vision, until then I will continue to give thanks for the beautiful people. ...
