All About Old West Soap Company and My Diary of Two Mad Soapers

Despite the name that sounds like we are a big corporation, (we picked that name, because we liked it) in actuality, Old West Soap Company consists of only two people, my husband Jim and I. My name is Virginia. I'm a vegan vegetarian who has been interested in all natural, organic products for a long time. So much so that in the past year we started a garden (an achievement in the dusty west) this past season, and loved eating what we grew. Next season we are upgrading, and are currently constructing an 8' x 24' greenhouse for vegitables, herbs, and to grow some of our own soap ingredients year around.

We live on an acre of property in Pahrump, NV, the heart of the NEW old west according to the signs as you drive into town. We are owned by two cats, a large 15# Bengal boy named Loki, and a smaller 8# Abyssisian female named BuBastis.

In my OTHER life, I'm a webmistress and have been designing, building, and maintaining websites professionally since 1999. I've been building websites for fun since 1993. The largest website I've built is for a custom bolts manufacturer called Vegas Fastener Mfg. One thing I love about soaping is it keeps me from sitting 16 hours in front of a computer monitor!

How did you get into soaping?

Like a lot of soapers, I got interested into soapmaking to try and find a soap I didn't have an allergic reaction to. Even hypo-allergic soaps made me itch and break out. I found out why when I started researching the ingredients in the "body wash" product I was using. It was hypo-allergenic for sensitive skin and had FRAGRANCE (well that explains some of the itching) plus a lot of other ingredients that are known skin irritants.

When doing research on trying to figure out what I could do about it, I found research about all the chemicals that are put into so-called soaps you buy in the market. You can read more details on our why buy natural soap page. I realized it was all the chemicals, additives, synthetic fragrances that they were putting in soaps that was causing my allergies. So I began making homemade soap and got instant relief.

We pride ourselves on all natural ingredients. Everything from the oils used, to the all natural essential oils used to scent our soaps derive from nature. Most of our soaps are also Vegan, with only a few exceptions. When you purchase a bar or a bottle of soap from us, you know you are getting an excellent, all natural product for a good price.

I admit that I did cave and use fragrance oils on a few of our soaps because some of my customer's favorite scents are just not found in nature. But, those soaps are clearly marked that they use fragrance oils, and I shop around for the best suppliers of the "cleanest" fragrance oils I can find.

At this time, the only wholesaling we do is to local retail stores in our home town. We do not wholesale any soaps other than that. We may, however, do that in the future.
