Great Green Macaw

| Rainforest Biodiversity Group is an environmental non-profit organization based in Madison, WI. The group was founded in 2000, and was originally called Friends of the Great Green Macaw. The group has operated primarily in the Sarapiqui region of Costa Rica. The Great Green Macaw has become a flagship species in this region, as it is one of the few places on Earth where one can see these endangered birds. We have changed our name to better reflect our goals of protecting rainforest habitat for the good of all species (including us!), and in particular the migratory birds who travel very far from home, expecting these stands of forest to be there. We are selling for ourselves on eBay as a means to support our staff efforts in Costa Rica, and continue to initiate local conservation initiatives in Costa Rica by working directly with local landowners. |

Costa Rican Bird Route

| Our current local conservation initiative is creating the Costa Rican Bird Route. The Costa Rican Bird Route project, upon completion, will conserve more than 1200 acres of rainforest habitat in the Sarapiqui region of the country. The pink part of the map above shows where the route will be located. We plan to achieve this by working directly with 6 local landowners who want to use their land in a sustainable way, but also need to make a profit to feed their families. We will assist them in preparing their land for eco-tourism purposes (like the highly lucrative bird-watching industry) and educating them on the sustainable standards their properites will need to abide by. These 6 sites, along with 6 existing nature reserve sites, will be incorporated into a Bird Route, which will be a premier destination for avid birdwatchers to come and see the world's most remarkable bird species. This bird route will be a first for Costa Rica, but we are hoping that our route will be a model for other routes, not only in Central and South America, but the rest of the world. |
