About Me
I have lived in the Pacific Northwest for 32 years and am one of those weird people who loves the rain, fog and gloomy days. This area of the world is green, lush and vibrant. It’s like the tropics, only colder!
My husband and I went into business for ourselves when our first child was born. We like the idea of setting our own hours and being flexible. We own a bookkeeping business and café, and I decided to do something on my own, so I started SeattleAttic.
There are several reasons why I started SeattleAttic and probably the main reason, apart from being able to spend more time with our growing family, is comfort. They say that in the months following 9/11, people were buying surround-sound systems, televisions, mail subscriptions for movie rentals and were spending money on making their homes more comfortable. In other words, being with family and friends was primary, and going out was secondary. People were seeking the comfort of home.
One of the ways I can help with that is by selling items you might find in someone’s attic, china, flatware, vintage plates and collectibles, things that offer the comfort of home.
This became even more a reason when I sold some gorgeous china to a gentleman in Nova Scotia, Canada. He had purchased some plates to complete his family’s set and they arrived broken. Before he bought from me, he sent me an e-mail asking how I would pack the china. He didn’t care about the shipping cost, but about how he would be able to have the china in his hands in one piece, so that he could share the delights of food with his family.
Another gentleman wrote that his wife and daughters had cooked a wonderful Thanksgiving meal, and to give them a break from the cleanup, he offered to do the dishes. He promptly broke a plate from his wedding set, and his wife was upset. They had been married a very long time and she didn’t think the plate could be replaced. Luckily, I had the very plate he was looking for. He was so happy to have found it, and I was happy to have had it for him.
More recently, a woman bought two china plates, and in the note that accompanied her check, she wrote that this was her wedding china, and she would now be able to invite two additional family members to holidays.
A woman from Seattle bought two salad plates from me. These were everyday plates but they meant a lot to her, as she had been missing them for a long time. As the pattern was discontinued, she hadn’t been able to find them. She came to my home and picked up the plates, thanking me for helping her complete this beautiful collection that held many memories for her.
These stories are what make me do what I do. Each plate or piece of flatware has a history of shared family meals, celebrations, holidays and carry with them the histories of each person who was able to enjoy a warm, comforting meal.
My family is important to me, as is yours. I have many things for which I am thankful, and if in a small way, I can complete that tea set, or get that one serving spoon to you, I will, and send with it many wishes for many years of comfort.
