Years ago my husband and I made bread dough ornaments and travelled to arts & crafts fairs thoughout the midwest to sell them. Bread dough lost its "flavor" and we went on to other enterprises (farming, politics, secretarial). In early 2007, we began to make dough ornaments again. We call the ornaments Dough Ditties because many are figures playing an instrument, but also because of the expression each conveys through their detailed faces.
Each ornament is handcrafted from a simple mixture of flour, salt and water, then baked at 250 for over 2 hours. Next we paint the ornaments with acrylic paint. Finally, each is dipped in gloss polyurethane 3 times. We are confident the ornaments will keep indefinitely if cared for properly. We recommend storing Dough Ditties in zipper-type plastic bags when they are not on display and we also discourage storage in attics or basements.
Our favorite creations are personalized ornaments for individuals. We've made everything from an astronaut to a piano player with his dog at his feet. It seems there are no limits to what can be done with bread dough.
