Artist Biography
Born in Washington, D.C. and raised on the Chesapeake Bay, Linda Rae Dixon is the youngest of six children and the only girl. She possesses a natural artistic talent that flows easily and is combined with the gift of creativity. What may take other artists years of study and hard work comes easily for Linda Rae; and it is for this very reason she takes no credit for her talent and believes that she was born blessed with an artistic gift. Her creative sense is always running full force. An idea drops into her head, swirls around in her brain until it gets into her soul and then out from her fingertips her soulful scuplture emerges. She has a genuine love and talent for all types of art, but for the past 10 years she has been creating enchanting colorful sprites with gossamer wings and softly cascading locks of hair sprinkled with fairy dust.
When clients first approach her work, they have a perplexed look about them, as all they see first are the feathers. Upon taking a closer look, a great big smile emerges across their face. Linda Rae watches closely for, and savors this smile. Many of her clients say her sculptures really do have a life-like spirit! She can create the exact same one over and over, but no two are ever alike because of their own unique spirit. They each take on their own personality--perhaps it’s the frame of mind she is in when she is creating that infuses their spirit. Her secret is that she really doesn’t sell Fairies … she sell Smiles! Her work makes people smile and invokes a great sense of joy! It brings joy to her when she creates, joy to the client who buys them and joy to the gift recipient who receives them. This joy is what makes her work so rewarding!

My sculptures are created from polymer clay, a term used to describe synthetic clays manufactured by several companies under their individual trade names. Each manufacturer's formula varies in durability, texture and color, but all are similar in one aspect: they are clays formulated to cure at temperatures far lower than typical kiln-baked clays. Each sculpture is designed with an artistic concept, but is also engineered to select the most appropriate combination of media to create the final form. My large sculptures deceive the eye with an infrastructure of wood and wire which forms a solid armature for otherwise impossibly fragile creations. Through careful selection of clays, I achieve just the right combination of effects in color, texture and flexibility. No molds or forms are used and numerous hours go into their creation. Strands of tinted natural fibers, feathers, sea shells and jewels add texture to my work. Pigmented ink and china paint here and there lend highlights to the natural colors of each piece. As a finishing touch, I also compose a short tale, describing each sculpture created:
Once upon a time there grew a magical place called the Sea of Enchantment. It's a very special place where Memaid, Shelliana swims freely and time stands still. Imagine a place described in the tales of our youth, where miracles and mischief existed side by side. Shelliana is a delicate creature born of the senses and human spirit, she comes into being at perfect moments, like when the fragrance of an ocean breeze reaches you the very same instant the warm summer sun kisses your cheek. She comes from quiet tears of overwhelming joy, from wisdom and the discoveries of truth and true love. She call to us at any age -- to dance play and be happy. Like angels, Mermaids were rumored to appear only to those who truly believed in them, and thus, especially to children and sailors of the sea. She is Queen of the Sea, known for her ability to see the future, her spells of enchantment, as well as, her great beauty. She often sings with a voice so enchanting that men can not resist her.
