For me, I have always been curious as to what a Mason was, exactly... I knew that my high school band director was one. I had seen some wearing Masonic rings, and displaying Masonic emblems on their cars. But, I still had no idea what a Mason really was.
Like many, I had seen movies that feature Freemasonry, for example, National Treasure, starring Nicolas Cage. I had also seen numerous shows on the History Channel about it. But still didn't know that much about it.
I finally got up the courage (and curiousity) to ask a man wearing a Masonic ring just what is a Mason, and how to become one... He told me that Masons of today are fraternal brothers joined together by friendship and brotherly love. Then said to be one, ask one. He directed me to a member of the lodge near where I live and told me to ask for a petition.
Once I did that, filled it out, and returned it, it was only a short time before I was set for my 1st degree, the Entered Apprentice. I received it on June 24, 2006. Next, I received my 2nd degree, the Fellowcraft, on August 8, 2006. Finally, I was able to receive my 3rd degree, the Master Mason, on September 16, 2006.
Later on in December, I was asked to serve as Junior Deacon in my lodge. This has been a great experience for me. From my experience, any good man wishing to become a better man should seriously consider Freemasonry. It has enhanced my life in many ways.
And, contrary to some beliefs, Freemasonry isn't devil worship, nor are Masons secretly plotting to "take over the world" (that is Pinky and the Brain). At every meeting in a United States lodge, we pray to God and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the AMERICAN flag. Not to mention, the Holy Bible is a centerpiece in every lodge.
