If you are serious about selling on eBay or
anywhere on the worldwide web/Internet--then please
read my college research paper below about what it takes
to have a successful Internet business today. It will open
many doors for you and help you in so many ways.
This is my first college research paper that I wrote
on March 11, 2007 about what it takes to have
a successful Internet business. I am so
happy to report that I received an A!
This essay was written by me,
Tonya Becker-Haddadeen, and no one is
allowed to publish it in any way or
form without my written consent.
What Are the Keys to Having a
Successful Online Business?
What are the keys to having a successful online
business? I am very knowledgeable in this area because
I have my own store design consulting and graphic design
business on eBay. I just recently opened my second
online store to compliment my first store and to help me with
marketing all of my products more efficiently. I am in the
process of starting a third website that will be targeting
other online business owners by letting them post their auctions
for free on my website and hopefully having a ripple effect to
where this strategy will bring in more business for the people
posting their auctions and for my graphic designs as well.
I have designed countless online stores and have visited
many websites in the process. In my research, I will discuss a
variety of effective marketing tools that are crucial in order to be
successful online. To begin, a website that is professional looking
and easy to navigate is very important. I can not tell you about all
of the websites that I have visited and I would get stuck on a page
in the person’s store. The back button on my web browser would
not work and frustration would set in. Many times, I would end up
closing the website and starting all over. Unless I had an
exceptionally good memory to remember the store’s name that
I was visiting or if I had copied and saved the web address
to visit their store again, usually I never got to go back to that
store because I would forget to do both.(Guenther, 2003)
That could have possibly caused lost sales that could
have been easily avoided had the correct precautions been
taken in the first place. Some people may think that all a person
has to do is buy a website, a domain name, list a few products
in the store, and the products will sell themselves, but the fact
of the matter is that this is all untrue. As a graphic designer,
I put a lot of thought and emphasis into each website that
I help to create. I picture myself as the consumer and as the
website owner to be able to design the perfect website for my
clients to be able to deliver a website that is easy to understand,
appealing, and delivers the products in a professional manner.
When a person goes into any website and they find themselves
getting lost and not being able to find what they are looking for,
usually the person will loose interest in the website and simply
leave to never return again.(Guenther, 2003)
To remedy this problem of Internet users leaving a website
prematurely, if the website owner would have had custom
navigational buttons on every store page which are simply
buttons that the customer would click on with their mouse to
maneuver the website more easily, the potential customer
would more than likely have stayed in the website longer and
hopefully made a purchase which is the ultimate goal of every
online business owner. Custom navigation is only one way that
a website owner can be sure that they are creating the perfect
online atmosphere to have a highly successful website.
(Guenther, 2003)
Another problem that I and others have seen with
people’s websites is that they do not show enough security
and privacy seals. Security and privacy seals are special seals
that one can get to place onto their website to verify that they are
in fact the true owner of the website. There are more and more
websites today that are being run by scam artists whose primary
goal is to steal people’s identities and credit card information.
If these security and privacy seals are in place, it makes the
website look more professional and more credible which helps
to build more trust among the website owner and their
potential customers.(Bloch, n.d.)
Based on my research, approximately 9.2 million Americans
reported loss of credit card information in 2005. In my research,
I also learned that according to the Federal Trade Commission,
42% of identity theft cases involved credit card fraud in 2004.
I found these statistics to be quite alarming. Not only do I
design for online websites, but I am a consumer as well.
It really does pay for one to pay close attention the next time
that they are shopping online. Not only can a person’s identity
get stripped from them without their knowledge, but once a
person finds out that their identity has been stolen from them,
according to a 2004 study, identity theft required an average of
600 hours of a victim’s personal time to fix the situation.
(Credit card industry facts and personal debt statistics, n.d.)
With many people today having busy lives with their
jobs and their families to look after, how does anyone find the
time or the energy to invest all of these hours to fix identity theft
that can be protected under the right measures? It appears to be
a growing problem. Even I had been approached by a scammer
from Africa through my eBay store one time last year. He wanted
to buy a store design package from me and mail me a money
order for a lot more money than what the package was selling for.
Then, he told me to send the remainder of the money to him. I knew
it was a scam from the start, so I reported it to eBay and they
suspended the member. I have read on eBay blog about other
stories from other eBay members who were approached by this
same scam.(Goldsborough, 2006)
In another instance, I received an email to my personal
email account and the email was pretending to be from Pay Pal
which is a company that I use to be able to receive credit card
payments through my eBay store. I did not respond to the email
because they were requesting my password and it seemed odd
to me. I reported it to Pay Pal and they informed me that it was in
deed a phishing scam. A phishing scam is where someone will
get an email in their inbox from a very familiar website that the
user has done business with. The scammers will then email that
person asking them for their password or for some other private
information. The email will look very authentic.
The scammer will even post what appears to be the actual website
inside of the email to try to fool the other person. A person has to
be very careful when receiving these types of emails and should
always report them. It is best to never reply or open the emails.
When someone needs to make a credit card payment or anything
that contains their private information, the best thing to do is to open
up a brand new web browser and for the person to enter the
web address themselves. This reassures the customer that they
are indeed on the authentic website and not some illegitimate
website.(Goldsborough, 2006)
Approximately 1.2 million U.S. computer users suffered
phishing losses of more than $900 million between May 2004
and May 2005, according to market research firm Gartner.
Phishing involves e-mails (and sometimes instant messages
and phone calls) aimed at persuading you to provide details
about your credit card, bank account, online payment service,
or eBay password.(Goldsborough, 2006, ¶3)
All of my personal mishaps with scam artists go back to my
original claim about the importance of having a professional
looking website. An online business is most effective when
it has a professional look and feel to it. Not only does the
customer need to feel safe to use their credit card information
on the website, but they also need to feel welcomed and to be
able to read the site very easily. It is a good idea for one to
keep in mind who their audience is when building their website.
If their primary customers are beyond the age of middle aged
people, then they may need to consider the size of the
letters and making sure that the colors of their website
are easy on the eyes. If a person is not too inclined
in the area of building their own professional looking
website, they can always hire a professional graphic
designer to do it for them.(Kaiser, 2007)
Some people may think that it is a waste of money
and time to make a professional looking website with graphics.
Some will say that it is the product that sells and not the design
of the store itself, but think about it. Would a person rather shop
at a poorly designed website or at a website that looks professional,
well planned, and organized? Which site would look more trustworthy
to buy from? Where would the customer be more inclined to give
out their credit card information to? The answers are simple.
The majority of people will buy from a website that looks
trustworthy and professional over the poorly designed
website.(Kaiser, 2007)
The first time most people hear about one’s company or
product, the first thing the consumer is going to do is go
into the search engines and search for it. When the website
comes up, if the website does not have a credible look and
feel to it, then that’s going to say something about the
quality of the website’s products as well.(Kaiser, 2007)
To succeed in e-commerce and to maximize your opportunities,
the website has to be more than an electronic advertisement.
It must provide the same services consumers receive in traditional
commerce. A well-designed website will allow consumers to
find
the products they want, determine product availability, and trace
shipping and delivery schedules. In other words, the site must be
the catalog, the salesperson, the consumer service representative,
and the cashier; and the site must be efficient and available
around the clock. It must inspire trust and build consumer
loyalty.(Chen et al, 2001, ¶6)
A Web site must be carefully planned and executed to fulfill
its marketing mission. Its content, look, and navigation should
enhance the offline marketing activities designed to introduce
your organization to new customers and encourage repeat
business. Appropriately, traditional media should actively promote
the Web site as another way for your target markets to learn more
about your organization's offerings. Properly planned and executed,
online and offline marketing activities can snergistically produce
significantly better results than either one can do alone.
(Britt, 2004, ¶5)
Before someone opens an online business, they should
do their homework first. There is a lot of competition on the
Internet. One should visit other websites that are similar to the
website that they are interested in having and seeing how the
other websites are promoting and advertising to see what works
and what doesn’t. If one is confident in what type of website that
they want to have, it is then time to hire a professional to take care
of all the design details to get everything in order. After the website
is developed and the products are set in place, the marketing
and advertising can begin. If one needs help in this area as well,
they can also hire a professional to help them, so they can get
the most for their money and start increasing their sales to
achieve optimal success.(Britt, 2004)
With all of these steps in mind, one can have a successful
online business. Every step of the process works together like a
ladder. If one leaves out any of the steps, then they can not reach
the top of the ladder of success. The professional appearance
and functionality go hand in hand and will be play a big role in
how successful an online business will become. If a person’s
website is poorly designed, it not only reflects onto the owner
of the website, but onto their products as well. A well developed
website is definitely a very important key to having success in
