Exonumist of the American Revolution
I am an Exonumist (i.e., collector and researcher of medals and tokens) of the American Revolutionary period. For the purposes of my collection, I consider the Revolutionary period to include the events leading up to, and resulting from, the signing of our Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, starting with the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770, and culminating in the ratification of the Bill of Rights on December 15, 1791.
Just as history tends to be written after the fact, most medals and tokens that memorialize the American Revolution tend to observe the anniversaries of the events, such as the Jubilee (50th), the Centennial (100th), the Sesquicentennial (150th) and the Bicentennial (200th). For etymologists and lovers of Anglicized Latin, there are also medals honoring the 10th anniversary (Decennial), the 20th (Vigintennial), the 25th (Viginquintennial), the 75th (Septuagesiquintennial), the 125th (Quasquicentennial), and the 175th (Septaquintaquinquecentennial). There is even an 1890 medal that honors the 112th anniversary of the evacuation of Valley Forge! I collect them all, with the exception of the Bicentennial, which is simply too large and numerous to tackle at this time (or perhaps ever in my lifetime).
