About me...

My name is Jim Griffith but most folks know me as Griff or Uncle Griff. I was eBay's first Customer Support rep, hired by Pierre Omidyar and Jeff Skoll way back in late October, 1996.

I have had the distinct honor and privilege of watching eBay grow from a small site in 1996 (then called AuctionWeb) to a singular and most astonishing cultural phenomena - unequaled in history (and completely unexpected I should add.)

Today, I am Dean of eBay Education, lead instructor for eBay University, ambassador-at-large and company spokesperson as well as the host of the weekly eBay Radio show on wsradio.com. I also am the author of "The Official eBay Bible." Most of my waking hours are spent either evangelizing for or teaching others about, eBay or browsing, buying and selling on eBay. Whether leading an eBay University workshop every few weekends, talking to the press, I get to meet hundreds, sometimes thousands of new and seasoned eBay bidders and sellers every week. I love hearing their incredible stories, collecting their usually spot-on suggestions for changes and new features and yes, compiling and forwarding their complaints about the same.

As you might imagine, working for eBay is an incredible opportunity. I am surrounded by the most talented and energetic people in the Internet workspace. Most everyone who works at eBay also uses the site everyday either as buyers, sellers or both. For an example, try searching on the text in title and description for "I am an eBay Employee"

Through it all, I still love to buy and sell... ok, maybe mostly buy these days but I do try to sell stuff every few months in order to understand the site from the seller's perspective. I tend to offer items from my own collection of unusual antiques, textiles and decorative arts but I have an unquenchable passion for fragrance, including mens and womens cologne and perfume. Since my job provides me the opportunity to travel to many cities both in the US and abroad, I love to hunt down the small, hole-in-the-wall perfumeries and shops to hunt for the rare and out-of-production scents that so many of us crave. I tend to keep only a few for myself and sell the rest on... you guessed it!

Beyond the joys of buying, collecting and selling, I derive the most pleasure from provding helpful advice, mostly, but not limited to, all matters "eBay" to all new and seasoned eBayers. It's how I got started here, way back in May of 1996 as "Uncle Griff" when there was only one chat board, no Customer Support and folks depended on each other for answers to questions.
