WHO
ARE WE?
Above
all, 'yokodana' is a family business since 1989, selling on ebay
and the web since 1998. It is just two of us -- Yoko
Lewis here in Delaware (USA)-- and Yoko's brother manning the office
in Japan. Other family members and long-time friends and associates
throughout Japan also work with us to procure the wonderful things
we post here on ebay and elsewhere.
Yoko
is the third generation of a family in rural Japan which has been
buying, selling & collecting Japanese art & antiques for almost
100 years. Growing up as she did surrounded by beautiful traditional
Japanese artwork, textiles and collectibles, she is happy now to
use ebay and internet technology to bring the things she loves to
more people around the world.

What's new in the world of Japanese Culture, Textiles,Arts & Kimono?
We have found that interest in traditional Japanese culture -- its fabrics, kimono, accessories and its many arts -- has mushroomed world-wide even in the last 10 years. In fact, since we started our site in 1998 we have seen a steady growth in the public's appreciation of traditional Japanese culture, arts and kimono.
Exciting to us also, is the virtual explosion of new and creative uses of all sorts of things from Japanese culture by today's youth & fashion culture: Joining us older types who fell in love with just the traditional culture, history and people are a new generation of Japanophiles -- but they call themselves something else entirely.
We see blends of interest in everything from martial arts, love of calligraphy to J-Pop (music), Anime, Manga, people calling themselves Otaku (not the meaning of the word you'll find in your older dictionary) who are involved in Cosplay and more -- so much is going on in fact that a few years ago we added a gallery to showcase these developments and creativity.
Then, in keeping with the spirit of the times we changed our old bulletin board to a blog last year. On our blog we not only do the predictable self-promotional things about our own bulk kimono packages & vintage fabrics, but we also like to highlight instances of creativity and provide news updates of the latest iterations of this thing called Japanese Culture, Fashion & Arts as it continues to evolve in the 21st century, especially relating to kimono & Japanese fabrics.
While we (those of us grew to love Japan in earlier decades before the internet) surely don't always 'get' these new amalgams of old and new in Japanese culture, we are truly excited by the fact of them -- and trying to keep up as best we can. It has never ceased to amaze us how the Japanese manage to take things into their culture and make it their own, looking so much like the same thing in the West -- but truly being different, being Japanese, yet new in its own way. Some scholars say that this has been the way of Japan since the Black Ships of Commodore Perry forced open the ports of Japan in the late 1800's -- we tend to agree.
