Care and feeding of your Rolex watch or I didn’t know I had to wind my Rolex.
Oyster Perpetual (No Date) which is the water resistant (oyster) automatic watch

Pos. 1 – Position when wearing
Make sure your crown is fully screwed-down. In this position the watch is sealed tight providing full protection for the movement if the gaskets and case tube is intact. The watch is ready to be worn.

Pos. 2 - Hand winding position: Yes automatic watches need to be wound they run better if you wind them routinely and stay more accurate.
Crown unscrews counterclockwise to the point where it is free of the case tube screw threads, it will spin gently if turned. In this position the watch is ready for manual hand winding by turning the crown clockwise approximately 30 full times. If the watch has not been worn for 1 or 2 days, it will be necessary to rewind the watch in order to fully charge the movement and to guarantee that it will run properly. Most watches have between a 32 and 42 hour power reserve. Older watches with older mainsprings may have less power reserve.

Pos. 3 - Time setting position:
Crown is unscrewed and is pulled out to its furthest position (be gentle). This is the position for setting the time by moving the hands either clockwise or counter-clockwise. The second hand is stopped automatically and will not advance again until the crown is pushed back to Position 2 (this is called the ‘hacking feature and does not apply to watches produced before 1972). Once the time has been set, screw the crown back in without stripping the case tube (which is aluminum) threads.

Date & Datejust (non-quickset models) which is the water resistant (oyster) automatic watch that you must turn 24 hours to change date.

This is the same position for setting the time.
