...about the photographs...

All of my photographs are taken using a 1940s wooden field view camera outfitted with modern lenses. Complete with tripod the camera package weighs close to 50 pounds. It can be a tricky camera to use. Instead of looking through a viewfinder, as in a modern 35mm camera, the photographer sees the image projected upside down and backwards on a 4 x 5" groundglass screen at the back of the camera.

The camera produces 4 x 5" negatives with extremely sharp detail, making it ideal for capturing natural subjects. I use only available light when making my images, with no distortion or enhancement filters.  I print all of the images myself in my darkroom in Pennsylvania Lykens Valley, using traditional printing methods. No digital manipulation or enhancement is involved. I take great care in creating the finest prints I possibly can, hand-producing each photograph to museum-quality standards. All prints are produced on Fuji Crystal Archive paper to give the highest quality print that will last for at least a century without discoloration or deterioration.

I mount and mat each photograph with 100 percent cotton rag board and use museum-quality frames and premium glass. Each photograph is original and signed. I do not sell reproductions.   After several years of living and photographing in California and the Southwest I decided to return to my home state of Pennsylvania and photograph some of the fragile rural landscape there, which is vanishing too quickly under modern progress. I try to capture the quieter places on film and give the viewer the sense that they've seen some little pocket of the world a bit more deeply.
