How I Started Making Books!
Because I left the binding for Christmas until the last minute I was working on the books all the time. I started to take them with me to work and work on them during my breaks. A coworker noticed me working on them and asked. I had a stack of them with me, she took a look and was in love with the idea of buying a hand bound journal for her niece for her birthday. We made a deal and thus the seed of making books for sale was planted. I knew it would allow me to make books as my hobby and not overload my friends and family with gifts of books.
The small idea as turned from hobby to passion and is now a website and blog. It the best obthat has ever paid me any amount of money.
My books are all adhesive free exposed bindings. This means that the stitches that hold the book together are viewable along the spine and decorative. I used cotton, hemp and linen to sew my books up. I use acid free paper and quality materials.

My books are all made 100% by my hands. I choose each and every piece of leather, fabric, paper and fold every signature and trim every page. I start with the cover and match the insides to reflect it's character. It important to me that the book works as a whole and has the proper feel. Each of my handmade books is a one of a kind work of art and is signed and numbered. I take great pride in my work and enjoy it. Each journal is symbolic of my dedication and enjoyment of this craft. When someone holds one of my journals for the first time they are overwhelmed with the softness of the leather, the heft, sturdiness and the decorative spine.
At my website my journals sell for $24.00 to $50.00 My custom work prices are based on the style of sewing, price of leather, cost of the paper and amount of time spent on the book. I feel that my custom books are some of the most reasonably priced on the internet.
I use a variety of materials for my books. I prefer sheep hide for my covers. I love how soft it is to touch. I use a sheep hide that is tanned in the US. For my journals I use Strathmore or Fox River paper in 24lb styles. It made in the US and is readily available. Very nice to write or sketch on and fairly inexpensive in comparison to some papers in the same weight category. I always sourcing paper to keep my costs down. Fir sketchbooks I will fill them with any paper you like. For my own I use a Strathmore drawing paper or a heavy water color paper. IN addition to making books, sketchbooks and journals I draw, paint and make sculpture. I make some small abstract paintings, but usually I paint and draw landscape scenes- of Down East Coastal Maine of my town and area. I've painted the Quoddy Head Lighthouse, the bridges of my local towns and many scenes of the local beaches; as well as a few still life paintings. Check back often for low priced auctions of my lively drawings and paintings!
I usually working in watercolor, gouache and pen and ink. I will add some pastel pencil or charcoal if I think the image needs it. 100% of my work is done en pleine air- on site looking at the actual scenes, unless stated other wise. Working outdoors gives my work a sense of life and activity. And seems to capture the active but slow placed natural beauty of Maine. When people tell you that life in Maine is different- they are right. Life here is at a slower pace than other places. People here don't rush- they know that there si plenty of time for things to happen.
I have my painting in a gallery here in Maine. Currently the price is $75 for a small watercolor 5"x7" in size. Getting my work in a gallery is very exciting. The drawback to that is that if the piece sells I only get $50.00- the gallery gets $25. Which is reasonable but dissapointing. So here on Bay you are getting a deal on my work.
The Fine Print
RETURN POLICY
I've removed my return policy from my items to save reading and room as well as typing time. My policy is thus: You may return your items for a full refund of the item price. The item price only. I don't return shipping and I don't pay for you to return the item to me, but you get teh full price of you item back. I work it this way- I return the money upon receiving the item and inspecting it for damage. I don't refund any of the price if your kids, you or your animals damaged the journal- only for faults in workmanship. I will also refund your money if you aren't happy with the journal- it wasn't what you expected from the pictures.
