My Ebay Story Hello, My name is Dede. I have been selling cards on Ebay since August of 1998 and have two incredible stories to share. Shortly after I began selling on eBay, I sold a card of Stewart Beach in Galveston, TX, to a man in Houston. When he received the card, he turned it over and saw that it was one his mom had sent "to a trader in Vermont". Well, the card was actually sent to my mom in 1942 and was a card that had been among a collection that she had given me over 40 years ago! I think it's amazing that a card started out in Galveston over 60 years ago, was sent to my mom in Vermont then passed along to me in her collection,then listed on Ebay in Colorado, and the son of the original owner ends up being the high bidder! Early in 2004 I was searching for cards of Woodstock, VT, where my mom is from. I found a card of the high school she attended but already had that particular card. However, the fact that the listed card had been mailed from Woodstock in 1942 (a couple of years after my mom graduated), caught my interest. I contacted the seller to find out who had sent the card and lo and behold, the card had actually been mailed by my mom to a lady in Iowa! Well, I had to have that card! By the time I received the information from the seller and went back to bid the auction had ended with another high bidder! I wasn't going to give up that easy. I contacted both the seller and the high bidder and was able to purchase the eBay card and then sent the high bidder the duplicate card I had. It all worked out for everyone! It is amazing how interesting little connections like this happen so often through eBay. It truly is a small world! A Collection That Got Out of Hand Being a natural born pack rat all my life, I guess it's no wonder that I would end up with so many postcards (as well as lots of other stuff!) I have a hard time 'letting go' of things but am getting better! This is why in 1998 I decided to start slowly selling my collection of over 60,000 cards and thought what better way to do it than eBay. Of course since I started selling, I have purchased collections and continue to add to my inventory. I think I may have well over 100,000 cards by now. I am also a part-time postcard/paper dealer and set up at shows throughout the year in Colorado as well as the surrounding states. In 2000 I become a co-sponsor of the Denver Postcard Show, Postcard and Paper Odyssey held twice a year in Golden, Colorado. When I first started selling on eBay I didn't realize how much work would be involved. It definitely keeps me busy! This is actually like a second job. I work full time as an Office Manager in a private Montessori pre-school and am a former Montessori teacher. Sometimes I think about quitting my full time job and just doing eBay but I'm such a "people person" and think I would miss the daily contact with my co-workers. Besides the story I shared earlier, I've had several other interesting stories shared with me by people who have purchased my cards. Many people have won cards that gave them a direct connection to their past. Once I sold a card of a beautiful home in California. The high bidder was a man who had grown up in the house that was pictured on the card! I love hearing people's stories so if you purchase a card from me and have a special story to share about that card, please do so! Currently, my special collecting interests are: Huntsville, Alabama dating from 1900-1960s, early Woodstock, VT, real photo cards of children with toys or doing interesting activities, children blowing bubbles, early playgrounds, beautiful art cards of children, interesting sets and series, and snowmen. I would love to hear from other avid postcard collectors!
