This is a fairly large 20x24" oil of 3 Zebras that I saw on a trip to South Luangwa in Zambia last year. They are called Crawshay's Zebra and are a sub-species of the Plains or Burchell's Zebra found in other parts of Africa. Crawshay's can be recognised by the clear black and white stripes that extend around the belly and below the knee. Personally I think they are the best looking Zebra around and fine looking animals. Of the hundreds of photos I took on the trip I picked out two, taken on the same day and in the same area that I thought would make a good composition for the painting:

As usual I started with a fairly basic drawing, just ensuring that everything is anatomically correct, including the vitally important stripe pattern. I then "sealed" it with a very light wash of burnt sienna thinned right down with turps. This is left to dry for a couple of days before I started blocking in the basic form, shape and colour. Again, nothing detailed at this stage, just creating an "undercoat" as a basis for the detail that will come later. |

All the basic shapes and form are now blocked in and the canvas is covered although the painting is still not even half finished at this stage in terms of hours painted. The painting will now be left for a week or so for this stage to dry before beginning work on the detail. |
| I've been working just on the background detail and it's only now that the painting is beginning to come together. The zebras now look to be a part of the scene rather than just placed there. Again I'm going to leave this to dry before going back to the zebras. the only reason for this is ease of working - those zebras are going to require a lot of close attention and it's much easier to do it without the fear of smudging today's work in the process.
I've been working on the zebras again and I think another day should see this painting completed. Here's the finished painting. It's taken a fair while longer than I had anticipated and I'm dreaming stripes but I'm very pleased with it.
