Our companion animals give us companionship, and unconditional love. It seems only fair that we fulfill their most basic needs...food, shelter, medical care and friendship!

Unfortunately, we humans haven't always lived up to our end of the bargain. Take pet overpopulation for example-there are, quite simply, far more animals than there are good homes! But theres something that you and I can do to change that.

*~* My Father's Little Angel Dog "Charlie" *~*

Last week I received the dreaded call, my Father had a stroke and was in the hospital. You tie up a few loose ends, drop everything else and go. ( Thank you to my most understanding buyers at the time and also to my husband who took time off to stay home with all our fur and feathered babies.)

Once I got over to the Olympic Peninsula where my Father lives, the story came out. My Father had a stroke while in his carport and laid there for 5 1/2 hours until someone came home to find him. Although he had his cell phone in his pocket, he could not reach it. He swears that the only reason he is alive and did not fall asleep is because of his 10 year old Pomeranian named Charlie. Charlie jumped on him, walked on him, barked at him and licked his face the WHOLE 5 1/2 hours. When help did arrive Charlie made sure that they knew where Dad was, even then he was franticly barking and jumping as if he was trying to tell them to hurry and help him up.

Charlie is not a trained service or therapy dog, infact he has suffered seizures the last 5 years or so and is on medication for them. My Father always holds him while he has one. In my Father's hospital room hangs a small photo of Charlie by his bed, the flash in the photo makes it look like Charlie has a Halo. Just a dog? I say, no. Thank you little Angel Dog Charlie!

LITTLE GIRL LIVED TO BE 20 YEARS OLD AND BABERS 21! THE MORNING WE TOOK LITTLE GIRL INTO THE VET (AGAIN) THEY SAID IT WAS TIME. I ASKED TO TAKE HER BACK HOME FOR JUST ONE MORE DAY WITH HER.  I FED HER LITTLE PIECES OF HAM & TUNA (NOT WHAT I USUALLY FED HER BUT IT WAS HER LAST DAY) WE SAT ON THE DECK IN THE WARM SUN AND WATCHED THE BIRDS AT THE FEEDERS. I BRUSHED HER AND PETTED HER ALL THE WHILE TELLING HER WHAT A GOOD KITTY SHE WAS. OUR VET CAME TO THE HOUSE THAT EVENING, I WANTED LITTLE GIRL TO BE IN THE COMFORT OF HER OWN HOME AND FEEL SAFE. SHE CROSSED OVER IN MY ARMS WHILE I RUBBED HER LITTLE HEAD, SHE WAS ONLY 3.5 POUNDS AT THE TIME.

"BABER" LOST HER BATTLE WITH A LONG ILLNESS THE MORNING OF THE DAY I HAD TO PICK UP MY MOTHER'S ASHES AT THE FUNERAL HOME. SHE MUST HAVE HAD A STROKE DURING THE NIGHT BECAUSE SHE COULD NO LONGER STAND UP.  I HELD HER ON MY LAP IN HER LITTLE LEOPARD PRINT BED WHILE OUR VET ADMINISTERED THE DRUGS THAT WOULD TAKE AWAY HER PAIN AND SUFFERING. THEY WERE BOTH THE BEST KITTIES AND ALTHOUGH THEY LIVED VERY LONG & HAPPY LIVES IT MADE IT NO EASIER TO LOSE THEM AND I MISS THEM EVERYDAY*

TO EVERYONE THAT HAS HAD TO CARE FOR A PARENT~ I KNOW YOUR PAIN & SORROW. I LOST MY DEAR SWEET MOTHER 4 YEARS AGO AFTER A LONG 7 YEAR DECLINE FROM ALZHEIMER'S, (AND YOU KNOW WHAT? IF I AM EVER GOING TO GET THAT AWFUL DISEASE I HAVE NO DESIRE TO KNOW IT IN ADVANCE) WE WERE SO LUCKY TO HAVE FOUND SHUKSAN HEALTH CARE. THE ONLY "EDEN" FACILITY IN TOWN. "EDEN" IS MORE OF A "HOME" ENVIRONMENT. LOT'S OF PETS- CATS, DOGS, RABBITS, BIRDS, CHICKENS (FRESH EGGS).LOT'S OF GARDENING, PLANTS, COOKING & THINGS TO STAY BUSY. BIG FAMILY OUTINGS AND GET TOGETHERS, BBQ'S, WESTERN NIGHT. WHEN YOU WALKED THROUGH THE FRONT DOORS THE FIRST THING YOU SMELLED WAS FRESH BAKED BREAD & COOKIES, AND NO ONE WAS JUST LINED UP AND DOWN THE HALL IN THEIR WHEEL CHAIRS! THE STAFF WAS THE MOST COMPASSIONATE, CARING PEOPLE I HAVE EVER MET. IF YOU EVER DO NEED TO FIND A FACILITY FOR A LOVED ONE PLEASE LOOK INTO "EDEN".

To each and everyone of you at Shuksan,

                                           I want to thank each and every one of you for your kindness and compassion for my mother Norma. I am so thankful that she spent the last 4 1/2 years of her life with such wonderful people. Thank you for making the worst day of my life more bearable by also comforting me and sharing all your stories of mom. When I was feeling sad that mom didn’t have a whole room full of family surrounding her in her final hours, I watched you come in to tell her you loved her, and that it was okay, and that you would miss her, and you kissed her and touched her and hugged her, and I realized she had a huge family. All of you who spent everyday life with her, and took care of her, and loved and laughed with her. And I saw the true sorrow in your eyes at your loss too. For all of you I am eternally grateful! David and Connie, thank you for running such a wonderful facility that people love to work at, that’s where it starts. Ruth and Nancy who have always been there to answer any of my concerns and tell me all the latest. Jill who is the BEST activities director and keeps everyone busy from boredom and is always doing fun stuff! The nurses who are responsible for so many people and so many things and still take the time for that loving touch. Conner, Sheri and Jen, thank you for Tuesday. I don't know what I would have done without you. Thank you for all the compassion you showed not only to mom, but to me. Thank you for easing her pain and keeping her comfortable. Last but certainly NOT least, to all the aids, caregivers, who I think have the hardest job of all. Cleaning, wiping, bathing, changing, feeding, lifting and on and on and on, and then starting all over again.Christie,thank you for sitting with mom while I went home to take care of some things, I’m so glad you were with her. Thank you ALL from the bottom of my heart for taking such wonderful care of my mother! Thank you for all the little extra things you did for her, the lotion, the makeup, the perfume, little things that mean so much, when you were busy and had lots more things to do, and 20 more people to take care of and attend to. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Not everyone can do what you do, it takes special people to give so much and care for others. God holds a special place for all of you. From time to time people tell me,

"lighten up, it's just a dog," or,

"thats a lot of money for just a dog."

They don't understand the distance traveled,

time spent, or costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about

with "just a dog." Many hours have passed

with my only company being "just a dog,"

and not once have I felt slighted.

Some of my saddest moments were

brought about by "just a dog." In

those days of darkness, the gentle touch

of "just a dog" provided comfort and

purpose to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," you

will probably understand phrases like

"just a friend,"  "just a sunrise," or

"just a promise."  "Just a dog" brings into

my life the very essence of friendship, trust,

and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings

out the compassion and patience that

makes me a better person.

Because of "just a dog" I will rise early,

take long walks and look longingly to

the future.

For me and folks like me, it's

not "just a dog." It's an embodiment

of all the hopes and dreams of

the future, the fond memories of

the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what's good

in me and diverts my thoughts away

from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday people can

understand it's not "just a dog."

It's the thing that gives me humanity

and keeps me from being "just a man

or woman."

1. Look at the Tag- When you are looking for an authentic Brighton Leather Handbag, look at a picture of the inside label. The leather label patch has a serial number on it, and the Brighton Creed. The Brighton Straw Handbags are slightly different. The tag doesn’t have a serial number on it, however it will say Brighton. It will usually have the signature Brighton Heart inscribed on the tag.
2. Marked out Labels- You may come across a Brighton Handbag where the serial number is marked out. These purses are usually overstocks or have been discontinued, and were probably purchased at an outlet. Brighton will mark out the serial number, to protect the retailers from giving a consumer a full refund, if they try to return it to a Brighton Boutique.
3. Check the Heart- On many bags there is a hanging heart ornament. On the heart, the word Brighton is inscribed on one side, near the bottom.

Brighton Purses are a step above the rest. And luckily the “knock-offs” are easy to spot, especially if you know what to look for. Be sure to check eBay-buying guide for more tips!!
