Christina's Magic Christina in a hat! Brown Gypsy Jazz Guitar I'm attracted primarily by the evocative power of colors and shapes and symbols that have traveled through time that bring with them the power to heal the soul. I see art as an extension of ones soul. I started jewelry making in the early 70’s. At the age of 18, I got a job working in a warehouse in East Austin, making earrings that were sold in headshops across the country. At the time I deemed myself a seamstress, not a jewelry maker. Sewing and embroidery was an art that my mother had taught me at a very early age. In my twenties, I made handmade gifts for family and friends due to the fact that I had very little money to buy gifts. Later, when I was able to afford to purchase gifts, the recipients complained about not receiving the homemade goods. Hummm.... maybe I had something here. In the 80's I became a single mom with two children. I went back to school and got a Graphic Design degree. I moved to California, worked for an advertising agency but I missed Texas. I traded in the west coast beach for the opportunity to be a starving artist in Austin, Texas. Round two of the starving artist tour lasted until 1991. I had spent the holiday season doing open air artshows with my runny nosed son in tow. I went to place an ad in the local newspaper office and decided that working in a heated office wasn’t such a bad idea. I had been a graphic designer there for fifteen years until March. Working for the newspaper sort of paid the bills but the desire to create my own art never died so now I am freelancing again. Then there is that ongoing inability to throw anything away that could be converted into a beautiful piece of art. I can thank my dad for that trait. He had the ability to fix anything with a hammer, a drill and a little paint. I think it has been a blessing to sometimes not have the funds to purchase the needed materials to create my art. In the early 90s it forced me to use polymer clay, when I really wanted a kiln. I taught myself how to make paper from recycled flyers found at the newspaper because I couldn’t afford the mat to frame my watercolored art for an artshow. Then I started making greeting cards with the leftover recycled paper. Again, friends and family expected the handmade cards and were offended if they receive Hallmark cards. In the past year I have added ACEOs, Art Trading Cards. Altered Art and Collages to my paper works. Now when I shop around in art supply stores, I see tools, books and kits to do almost everything I have ever taught myself to do. It excites me to see that it has been passed on to two more generations through my son, grandson and two nieces. Armed with my stash of recycled paper, stained glass, mosaic tile, beads, buttons and lace I continue on my journey. I bring to you simple but elegant art that can either be an unexpected conversation-starter, or as familiar as your favorite sweater.
