WHAT OR WHO IS AETHELRED II ? Several people have asked me the above question. Just to clear things up, here is the answer. Aethelred II was one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings of England. He ruled from AD 978 to AD 1016. Aethelred is remembered as a weak, but oppressive, king. His reign coincided with a period of Viking attacks on England. The king sought to deal with these attacks by paying tribute, which, of course, encouraged further attacks. By 1014, he was king in name only, his son Edmund, had proclaimed himself ruler in the north, and he was dominated by the nobility in the south. The death of Aethelred II, in 1016, was a welcome event in much of England. His reign had so weakened the kingdom, that it was counquered by the Danes, a few months after his death.
