The answer is it cannot be done. If in fact the ion does travel across the room, the particle it attaches itself to will adhere to the closest possible positively charged surface, that being your walls, floor, ceiling or anything else it is close to.

Six months after you start using an ionizer you will have MORE bacteria collected in your home than before you started! 
The use of ionization only makes the problem WORSE!

Ionizers can create a fresh smell. The problem is that it is only a cover up, temporary fix. 
As soon as the ionizer is turned off, the effect is over. 
With an ozone generator the bacteria that is causing the odor can actually be killed so that when it is turned off, the odors are vanished, not simply "covered up".

Ozone Generators can also be used to give high ozone shock treatment to unoccupied areas.

These high ozone treatments are very effective in killing  the odor producing organisms.
Once the organisms are killed by a high ozone shock treatment, or a series of shock treatments, the odor will be removed, not just covered up by the temporary effects of ionization.

Absolutely not.  Ions cannot kill any organisms, therefore they will have no effect on mold or mold odors.

At first, when a person first smells the odor coming out of an ionizer, they are very impressed by the fresh spring like smell of the air coming out of it.  That fresh smell is what sells the product. 

Unfortunately that fresh smell is only temporary, since it lasts only until the ionizer is turned off. 
Ions have no ability to kill any organisms, and therefore no odors.
On the other hand, ozone kills the bacteria and mold, so it removes the odor, it doesn't just cover it up.

Stachybotrys Chartarum  (Toxic Black Mold) is a greenish black fungus found worldwide. It colonizes particularly well in high cellulose material, such as straw, hay, wet leaves, dry wall, carpet, wall paper, fiber-board, ceiling tiles, and thermal insulation.  The fungus (mold), before drying, is wet and slightly slimy to touch. There are about 15 species of Stachybotrys, that can be found world-wide. This toxic mold grows in areas where the relative humidity is above 55%. Breathing in even dried mold of this kind causes many different types of respiratory problems. Wherever you live, this mold could be found in your home.

Molds reproduce by making spores that usually cannot be seen without magnification. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors,  they begin growing and multiplying and soon the mold problem is out of control.
