About Me
I create art because I love being able to translate an image in my head onto paper. Whether I create ACEOs, which are small and fun, or a larger drawing or painting, I enjoy the sense of accomplishment and joy that I get from a job well done. My subjects generally include beloved stuffed animals from my collection, though I'm always experimenting with other themes. It's always fun to see people's eyes light up when they find a work of art they love.
Throughout the course of my work, there are many decisions to be made. Beginning with the subject, I generally pick a stuffed friend or object that means something to me personally, which makes it easier to engage others' interest in the subject. Next, I have to decide whether the subject would look better in a black and white drawing or a colored painting, which is often a difficult decision. Unusual colors always spark my interest and make a wonderful painting, but textures work better as a black and white drawing. Regardless of this decision, I find that having a firm idea of my composition is the best indicator of a successful finished product. My paintings and drawings are worked on, using layers and working from light to dark, until I feel that it's been worked enough. I don't like to overwork my images; instead I feel it is better to keep them light and let them feel a little more spontaneous.
In the past I created works of art in watercolor and graphite pencil that were generally the size of a standard sheet of paper (8 1/2" by 11"). My current work has veered toward creating ACEOs, which stands for "Art Cards and Originals." These are small works of art which must measure 2 1/2" x 3 1/2", but which can be created out of any media. There is no restriction on subject or theme. This type of art originated on eBay, where I discovered them and instantly fell in love. The size and originality of this art has drawn me in, inspired me, and kept me thinking creatively. While I still do larger works, the ACEO has captured my imagination, and most of my current works are of this format.
