Daniel was born November, 30 2002 in a Multi Cab (type of taxi in the Philippine Islands) to a mother who was unable to afford to keep him. Daniel was dropped on our doorstep on December, 3rd 2002. Due to mother inability to breastfeed, Daniel had not eaten the first 3 days of his life.
At age 41, I had already raised my children and was ready to enjoy the childfree life. My wife Carmen, 38 at the time, was unable to have children and took this as a sign from God. I came kicking and screaming into the reality of this new revelation.
Having an orphan in the Philippines and a life in the United States was no easy situation to contemplate. We spoke with a professional who informed us of how expensive it would be to adopt Daniel and bring him to the U.S. It was clear we could not afford to do that at the time so we decided I would go back to the States and hopefully save enough to adopt.
Carmen stayed with Daniel until he was 1 year old. Needless to say, that is no way to raise a family. Carmen came to the U.S. with the intention of helping to earn enough money to adopt. Little signs started showing almost immediately that this brainy idea was failing also. We had each other, but we did not have Daniel and could not imagine waiting until he was 4 or 5 to adopt. The final Straw came when I heard Carmen crying in her dreams. It just broke my heart. But how could I support my family?
American Islander was born June 2004 and is now making it possible for my family to be together.
