Hello, and thanks for coming by to take a look at our store! We've been in business off-line since 2002 supplying custom cut and over sized wood blanks to artists and turners. Customer service is the cornerstone of our business so don't hesitate to contact us regarding your needs.
We started the Appalachian Blank & Slab Company in 2002 to cater to a growing population of local wood turners and artists looking for larger turning blanks that were not commonly available. Cutting large blanks creates a lot of good-sized by product so we are here to sell the excess rather than sell it for firewood.
My name is Tim and my partner's name is Bobby and we are both turners. We do not carry generic domestic wood and we do not stock thousands of pre-cut blanks. We search for the best figure and the largest, old growth trees that are a logistical nightmare to deal with and either process and market them immediately or store them for spalting. This is why, when visiting our store, you may see 40 blanks of just Elm, Walnut or Maple. We choose old growth trees not just for the blank size but because they are more twisted, have more burl and internal defects such as beetles and fungi due to their failing health.
We then cut the tree creatively to highlight the natural figure. We will cut any blank listed or special orders to your specs for free, just let us know what you need and if you have any problems with your purchase please contact us; your satisfaction and repeat business is our first priority.
Unlike many commercial sellers we do everything by hand and do not use commercial band saws to achieve volume. We hand cut each piece to match the right size with the area of figure; commercial band saws cut straight down the length of a tree without any regard for figure location. We do not, at this time, cut blanks round unless the blanks are 16" plus diameter due to the size of our band saw blade. The less we have to process them, the less we can charge you. We appreciate your understanding and your business.
