In an attempt to give something back to the genealogical community I have begun a small company making reprints of some of the older, hard to find genealogy books and am offering them at a reasonable cost.
These books are all printed to order although they are much less expensive than the typical photoduplicated reprints available..
The reprinting of old titles can be an expensive proposition.Traditionally, an original of the book had to be found and taken apart to be copied. The pages were cut out and then either copied on a copy machine for low volume, high cost one-at-a-time reprints or pasted onto a layout board by hand for photographing to make higher quality reprints. The expense of making the higher quality reprints meant that hundreds of copies of each title had to be printed at a time and then stored in a warehouse until they were sold.
Needless to say the high price, lower quality, one-at-aime reprints allowed many different titles to be reprinted and made available to researchers but the cost -- nearing 25 cents or more per page in some cases -- meant only research libraries could afford them. The high quality, high production reprints, on the other hand, could only be made for a limited number of titles that could sell enough to make back the investment, but ironically, the high volume meant that the costs of producing them could be spread out over hundreds of copies instead of just one so the cost of each book was relatively low.
What I have come up with is a process to produce a large number of various titles and print them one-at-a-time while using the latest technology and standard paper sizes to keep prices as low as the high production reprints.
The process I use doesn require destroying the original book so I have access to tens of thousands of titles I otherwise wouldn be able to reprint.I use a planetary book scanner, which is much slower than a sheet fed scanner and thus costs more to operate but doesn damage the spine of the book or require the book be disassembled.I feel that the protection of original copies of rare titles is important and the cost of the original book can easily offset the cost of the additional labor in many cases.I also use the latest computer technology to clean each individual page and electronically descew, size and position it on a virtual layout board that automatically adjusts for the page size. This saves an amazing amount of time over pasting the pages manually to a real layout board and the savings are passed on to the customer.
The end result is the best value to the customer when it comes to reprints of rare and hard to find genealogy books.
If you have a local history of genealogy title you are looking for that was published before 1964 contact me and I will see if I can find it.Even if you just have a surname or town you are researching, let me know and I can email you a list of books that I can get for you.
