For you book lovers, my most recent book illustration venture is out now, it is the hardcover Alive in Africa (isbn 13 978-1-59921-402-3) from Lyons Press and written by William Wheeler jr.  Bill passed away three months before this book was published. He was quite a guy...  adventurer, explorer, photographer....  his book was his life's dream. The book chronicles his life among the Masai and Efe Pygmies and his time in the Rift Valley. I met Bill during the time I was illustrating one of the two Vavra books I did,  The Unicorn of Kilimanjaro. Bill was involved in that project too. During the time in Africa for the U of K research, Bill, Robert Vavra and Joe Saccoman were attacked by a rogue Cape Buffalo in the area called The Forest of the Lost Child.  This terrible attack is detailed in Alive in Africa quite well. That any of them survived is a miracle.

And it is official now.... I held off as long as I could....but then I saw Twilight. Now, I am as obsessed as a person could be.  So I have added to my list of vampire personas I have painted (Rudolf Martin's Dracula, and Alex O'Loughlin's Mick St. John) the character, Edward Cullen.  And I paint Jacob Black too.  I paint them and paint them and paint them!

As I mentioned above, I have illustrated coffee-table books for Robert Vavra, two of them. I also have my art in the permanent collection of The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, and I am on the Arizona Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. I am one of the original Charter Members of the National Museum in D.C. Recently, I joined a very talented group of artists, The Equine Art Guild. I am also very proud to say that I am on the Art Team as a contributing artist for "Le Cadeau Du  Cheval" (The Horse Gift) Horse Mural Project in Alberta, Canada.  This mural is made up of many smaller paintings by artists from all over the world. When the panels are displayed together, they create a large equine image. "Le Cadeau Du Cheval" is also a book, my art is plate 101. The mural itself is a traveling exhibit.

I have two lives as an artist...the one that deals with galleries, invitationals and interior designers, and the one that is self-representing.  Please google my art website, mitchelson's Mountain Gallery.  I always wanted a way to really use my art to help animals, and I have this ability now. I hold charity auctions of my art with anywhere from 10% to 100% of the net proceeds donated to various animal charities and help with fundraising in other ways when I can.  I do this independently, with Artists United for Animal Rescue, (see link below) and through eBay's "Giving Works".   I am selling all sizes of animal art -  mostly originals and sometimes giclee prints. I paint in oils most of the time. My subject matter on eBay is primarily equine and canine, but not limited to those. For galleries I paint frontier themes, landscapes and figurative work as well-- My Barack Obama art, for instance.

Thanks!  I work out of my Mountain Tribe Studio, which I have had since 1978. It has moved with me from California to South Dakota to Arizona. I live up high in the mountains at The Promise Animal Sanctuary,  where my daughter and I privately support and care for rescued animals. Mustangs and other horses, dogs, cats, exotic birds, rodents... quite an assortment...  Most of them have special needs - both physical and emotional - and are permanent residents. A few are on palliative hospice care. We will be applying for our not-for-profit status as soon as we are financially able to do so. Going non-profit is very complicated but it is what we need to do.
