We Save Shelter Cats!
The Animal Shelter Assistance Program, better known as ASAP, is the volunteer program that serves the cats at the Santa Barbara County (CA) Animal Shelter. Founded in 1989, ASAP was the first organization working within a municipal shelter to stop the killing of adoptable shelter cats for the purpose of population control. Translation: No cats are euthanized for failure to find a new home within a given time period. ASAP euthanizes only those cats who test positive twice for feline leukemia, and those cats who cannot be safely handled by the volunteers or the public. Since November of 1990, all adoptable cats have been given a second chance at a healthy, happy life.

Why Our Program Works
ASAP volunteers provide all daily care for the shelter cats, including (but not limited to) cage cleaning, grooming, socialization, medications, treatments, and adoption counseling. Although many of the resources needed to keep ASAP going are of the "human" variety, saving cats can be expensive! We are fortunate to have fabulous support from the community, who have given generously of themselves and their funds because they believe in what we are doing.To better serve the cats, ASAP has separate funds designated for: - Cats who need expensive surgeries/treatments (Lester Fund)
- Older cats (Alexandra Fund)
- Foster kittens (Oscar James Fund)
- Blood tests for disease screening (Penelope Fund)
As you might have guessed, all of the funds are named after beloved ASAP cats. Fundraising is vital to ASAP's effort to provide continually better service to the cats and the community. Your bid in an "asapcats" auction helps save the lives of lost and abandoned cats who have no one else to care for them. ASAP is a California corporation that is exempt from taxation under IRS Code Section (501)(c)(3).
