Auau is a partnership between myself Jerry Edler and my brother John Edler begun in 1998 to offer authentic used Oceanic Art to a wide range of collectors worldwide.
Together each year we buy and sell more Oceanic Art then any other dealer in the world, by sales through ebay, museums throughout the United States and Europe, and a number of private collectors throughout the world.
We maintain an inventory of more than 2000 pieces. Each year we acquire hundreds of pieces from private collections, museum exchanges, individual private collections and occassional specialized collectiong trips throughout Melanesia.
There are well more than a 1000 distinct individual and unique cultures across Oceania. Our criteria for acquiring objects is they represent the quality and distinct characteristics of the carvers in the culture which produced them. We are always looking for objects humble or highly important that best chacterize the culture which produced them.
John Edler was trained in Archaeology, Anthropology and Art History. He is considered as one of the premier authorities on Oceanic Art in the world. John first began work in Melanesia in 1967. He is Author of Melanesian Art (1973), Contunuity and Controls: The Art of New Guinea (1978), Melanesian Images (1981), Art of Polynesia (1990), and numerous private papers. He has served as consultant and advisor to museums and important Oceanic Art collections throughout the United States, Europe, Russia, New Zealand, Australia and The National Museum of Papua New Guinea over the past 35 years. Jerry Edler is trained as a Photographer and has worked with John on a great many Oceanic Art projects since the mid 1970's. Jerry has worked in the United States, Canada, Russia, and parts of New Guinea.
Our inventory is strongest in objects which sell between $50 and $2500, these are the pieces we regularly list on Ebay. We maintain a large number of pieces which normally sell between 5,000 and 25,000 dollars as well as other pieces considered to be of the finest of their type which sell up to $75,000. A great number of pieces in our collection have excellent provenance. Many pieces have been carved with stone, bone or shell tools dating back to pre-contact 19th century, many others collected between the late 19th century and the late 1930's. Many objects are from parts of New Guinea whose objects were not collected before the late 1940's and from some cultures which were not even known as late as the 1970's.

It is our goal to provide quality customer service to all our customers.
We handle all the packing and shipping ourselves, as many items are unusual in shape and size please be aware shipping may take a week or more from receipt of payment.
I can ship anywhere in the world, but be advised International shipping on large pieces can be expensive.
If desired wooden crates can be made at additional cost to protect ornate pieces during shipment. If you have shipping concerns please contact me. We take great care in packaging our pieces but have no control over how shipping companies handle the boxes. Insurance is included in the listed shipping quote in my auctions. We are interested in purchasing small or large collections of tribal art, please contact me if you have items for sale.
