My Ebay seller name is barbjmark. "Merchandise" was truly my first word.
How does one sell merchandise by mail successfully for over 43 years?
I still remember at 9 months old, I was enthralled by merchandise on shelves in my grandfather's candy store. I reached out from my mother's arms to touch something and heard, "Ooh, don't touch, MERCHANDISE."
I gleefully replied, "merchandise!" That went down oficially as my first word.
I was already making and selling merchandise (as a book publisher) In 1976 when the first "mega" flea market evolved on Long Island, NY at a racetrack. Seeing over 1,000 merchants selling successfully, and 30,000 shoppers on a Sunday, inspired me find a product I could sell there.
I soon became famous for the fabric shower curtains I made and packaged. It attracted a manufacturer who suggested I buy
from their factory. I soon had to "buy" the majority of them due to the volume sales.
But, I always made many originals in the display. I created a color catalog, advertised in Country Living, Country Decorating Ideas, and House Beautiful. I invented and made fabric-covered shower curtain hooks (have a copyight for it), and made matching accessories.
The recession in 1992 convinced 5 of our "shower curtain" suppliers to retire. So my merchandise took a new turn.
It was "cutlery, a broad range of scissors and knives" for home and proessional use.
But, my love of graphic art and home decor caused me to add a broad range of stove burner covers. The merchandise was a huge success for two years. Then the flea market's property was sold out from under us merchants in 1994.
That convinced us to retire to Florida in 1996, until I was inspired to tackle a garage full of "merchandise!"
My love of graphic art gave me the urge to get a computer and learn to put all my merchandise on my own web site. From 1998 on, I was so busy selling on my web site, it wasn't until July of 2004 did I listen to everyone telling me to "try selling on Ebay."
Inside of a few years my J. Mark web site went from a fun hobby to a major challenge to ship as fast as the orders come in. I don't have time for auctions, so I just have to hope some lucky folks will land in my eBay store and enjoy what I sell as much as I enjoy the products.
What makes a success for 40 years running? Beautiful merchandise, value priced,
and a business owner dedicated to delighting customers.
