BeachComberBum & Ms. Gertie
BeachComberBum is a 44 year Alaska resident, Super Cub pilot and, retired, commercial fisherman. Spring, Summer and Fall bring both beachcomberbum and

Ms. Gertie searching to find all the floats they can.
Basset hound Ms.Gertie is a wonderful beachcoming
companion.

BeachCombing searches of distant
beaches produce authentic, aged and unique glass floats.

Each glass float is unique in some way.
Some will bear the markings of the specific manufacturer.

Some floats will show the marking and texture of years
of tumbling in the surf and sand. Some will still have the hand
woven nets attached. Others have tossed and tumbled in the surf and sand for
so long the nets are worn away and only the outline remains on the frosted
float. Years ago oriental glass floats were made on land and at
sea. They were hand blown or produced in a mold. They were then used on the
commercial fishing nets. This "human touch" makes each float unique.

Beachcombing is a
wonderful way to spend the day in Alaska's great outdoors but the day can get a
bit tiring.

But if
Ms. Gertie is left behind she still spends her time
"searching."
