Cachetmakers Spotlight Sabrina Curtis Cachet Makers Spotlight of Sabrina Curtis Cachets of Sabrina Curtis Dave Curtis got me started making block print covers about 3 years ago.At the time I was reluctant to try it, even though I am artisticaly inclined. I was observing Dave alot at first, who was at the time using a block-print method of printing with linoleum blocks. Dave then discovered another type of block called "Easy-cut Rubber Block". And once he started to use that (which is basicaly an eraser type of material),I could see how easy it was to draw and carve the material. After that, I had become inspired to try my first attempt at making a First Day Cover. My very First Day Cover was for The Peanuts, and I decided to do a cover with Snoopy's doghouse. At that time, I had just joined ACE(Art Cover Exchange)for the first time. So I carved out from the rear of a doghouse/Sopwith Camel,and attatched the Snoopy stamp to the rear of the doghouse. And that was my very first ACE cover. My very first cachet was was of a fly trapped in a Venus Fly Trap, and I also did a cover of a carnivorous plant which was not shown on any of the stamps. My husband Dave sold a few of them to regular customers, and 2 dealers as well. The remaining covers we took to The ACE Regional Meeting in Elyria,OH. Some of the Venus Fly Trap covers were exchanged for other covers from other ACE members. I had the number 382.5 in ACE at the time, which I kept for almost a year. I was persuaded to take up my own number at the 2002 ACE Annual Meeting, and now my number is ACE 420. Since then I have had several articles written about me by the ACE editor, Joe Doels. The first article Joe Doels wrote was for ACE Cover of The Year. The cover was a black crow which has a blue background and yellow and orange flowers. The following year in 2003,I was mentioned in The ACE News letter for a snowman cover, and a Valentines Day cover. In June 2004,there was an article about Dave and me,which des- cribed Daves style of block printing. The June 04' issue of The ACE Newsletter, shows the progression of the printing process for the Lewis and Clark bird they had discovered, which was The Nutcracker bird. There was 7 colors for that cover, so I had to carve the block 7 seperate times. The most recent article that Joe wrote was in May 2005, and it shows this years Chinese New Year with each of the 12 animals for that series of stamps. Animals are what I draw best, and that is where the Monet style of carving comes into play as Dave describes in the October 15,2005 article of First Days. I have done other types of before,and nature and animals is more of my speciality. Dave usually does one set of covers for every stamp that is issued, and Dave has a style all his own which has evolved over the last 7-8 years. And Dave does an excellent job of drawing,carving and printing the covers he makes. He is an excellen cachet maker, because he like myself has a style that is truly unique. And Dave deserves the credit for me being exposed to the idea of making First Day Covers. And if Dave had never shown me what the process of making a cachet is like, I may never even tried to draw and print the covers.
