Bluebead Mountain Trading Co. is a unique way to shop for Native American art/crafts: textiles, and also bead/leather work, jewelry, accessories, toys and dolls. Each of our offerings is unique and authentic; we do not have warehouse shelves of identical items. We enjoy wonderful relationships with the artists/craftspeople who make these artcrafts, and we love their work. We want to bring their creations to a larger audience, and we want to enable them to afford to continue with their traditions rather than clerk in convenience stores! Bluebead Mountain Trading Co. is named for Sacred Turquoise Mountain (Tsoodzil in Navajo; Mount Taylor, named for President Zachariah Taylor, in "Anglo"; el.11,301 ft.), the traditional marker of the southern boundary of Dinetah, the Navajo homeland. Linda and Mike Woal lived in sight of Tsoodzil at Continental Divide, New Mexico. As we came to understand the significance of the landscape to the Dine (The People; the Navajo))counterpart to how Anglo people see their Holy Lande came to appreciate the beauty of Tsoodzil as far beyond its physical presence
Since we were so struck by the spirit of Turquoise Mountain, we wanted to name our venture after the turquoise gemstone which is so distinctively Navajo. We asked Navajo friends if werovided we conducted Bluebead's business in the spirit of harmonyould call our little trading post "Bluebead Mountain." That was OK. "Harmony" refers to the governing Navajo idea of Hozho: balance, equilibrium, beauty! Bluebead vows to do business that way, so that every artcraft exchange is, equally, a sharing of spirit and values. Yes, we really do believe in that!
Bluebead Mountain also provides other services with a Southwestern/Native American focus, especially films and books about Southwestern culture.
