Books for America is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Washington, DC.

Our mission is to promote literacy, life-long learning, and understanding by distributing donated new and used books of all types; movies; music and instructional compact discs; audiobooks and more to organizations throughout the United States serving economically, socially, or physically disadvantaged communities and individuals.

Recipients include adult and youth literacy programs, youth centers, transitional homeless shelters, hospitals, inner-city and rural schools, assisted living communities for seniors, veterans hospitals, women's shelters, hospices, and other such organizations.

We obtain needed items both from donation drives held in communities, and also directly from publishers. Items you wish to donate could also be shipped directly to us.

Reading Literacy in the United States
Families living in poverty must use their financial resources to pay for food and shelter, not books.


The only behavior measure that correlates significantly with reading scores is the number of books in the home.

An analysis of a national data set of nearly 100,000 United States school children found that access to printed materials--and not poverty--is the "critical variable affecting reading acquisition."

 

Books for America is making great strides in fighting illiteracy and increasing knowledge and understanding - but we need your help! We auction off rare or otherwise collectible items to help fund our programs - bid high and bid often!

 

Latest News

- McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, VA receives 500 fiction novels from Books for America for their nursing care patients. 

- Calvary Bilingual Multicultural Learning Center receives 200 reference and non-fiction books on a variety of topics to develop their resource library. 

- Books for America distributes $3,000 worth of additional high-quality reference books and classics to the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Boys & Girls Clubs.

- The Arlandria Health Clinic of Alexandria, VA receives 500 children's books from Books for America to support their Reach Out and Read program for the disadvantaged Latino community that they serve.

- Books for America distributes children's and family-oriented videos to the Ronald McDonald House in Washington, DC.

- Bestselling authors Patricia Cornwell, Clive Cussler, Stuart Woods and Jimmy Buffett donate signed books for the Books for America fundraising auction on eBay!

- Edelman donates $1,000 to Books for America in support of the "Buy a Bookshelf, Build a Library" program benefitting Metropolitan Police Boys and Girls Clubs.  Edelman also held a book drive at their Washington, DC offices and collected more than 600 books for Books for America's programs.

- WVSA Arts Connection receives 100 art books from Books for America for use in  WVSA's art-focused programs for at-risk special needs children and youth.

- Books for America gives 230 children's books to The Coalition for the Homeless in Washington, DC for distribution to youths in their shelters.

- Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Care receives 300 children's books from Books for America for distribution to the disadvantaged community served by the Center. 

- Books for America provides the Metropolitan Police Boys & Girls Clubs with 1,000 children's books to help the MPBGC implement an Award for Reading program.
